VOLLEYBALL Things you should know but its okay
VOLLEYBALL Things you should know, but it’s okay if you don’t, because now you’ll know them.
The Court Rules ■ Sidelines are the longer parts of the court. ■ End lines are the shorter parts of the court (the line that you serve behind) ■ The net is in the center of the court – You cannot touch it ever. Not with your hands, not with your clothing. Nothing. Ever. So don’t. ■ The 10 foot line is 10 feet from the net (it’s shown as the 3 m line below). This is the area where you should begin your attacking approach from. ■ The 10 foot line is also a no-no area for the back row. Players whose position is in the backrow cannot jump while touching the ball, after the 10 foot line. They can, however, walk over it. ■ If the ball is served, spiked, set, or passed over the net and it touches the side or end lines, the ball is in. ■ When receiving the ball, you may play the ball off of any structure to send it over, you may not hit a structure when sending it to the other team, though.
The Players ■ Players are numbered: – 1 is the setter – 2 is the outside hitter – 3 is the middle blocker – 4 is the opposite/off-side hitter – 5 is the outside hitter – 6 is the middle blocker or libero. ■ The setter is a back row player, but they will move to the front to set up the front row players, therefore, if for some reason the setter does not set on the 2 nd hit, they should not be attacking with a jump (because they are in the front of the 10 ft line). ■ The libero is a backrow player only. It is a specialty position.
Rotating ■ Players rotate clockwise one position, after their team wins a point when the last point was scored by the other team. In other words, the team rotates when the first point is awarded after being the receiving team.
Service – When your side is serving ■ Game starts with a serve ■ Servers must serve from behind the line, off the court. Though, they may land in the court, if they do a jump serve and jump before the end line (similar to how the backrow cannot jump and spike past the 10 foot line) ■ Immediately after serving, the server should return to the court to play defense.
Receiving – When your side isn’t ■ You cannot set the ball off of a serve. serving ■ Receivers should be off the net, in order to receive the ball. ■ If you are going to be the person receiving the ball, call for it (“mine”, “me”, “got it”, etc. ) ■ If the ball is… – Short - it will hit the net and not come to your side or just fall over yell “SHORT” – Out of bounds – Yell “OUT”
Positions & Switches ■ Due to rotations, players will only be in their designated area 2 times during a complete rotation. Therefore, switches must occur during play to have the best suited player in proper positioning. ■ After the ball is sent to the opposing team, players will quickly switch. – When your team is serving: – You switch as the ball is hit by the server – When their team is serving: – You switch after your team has received the ball, and is sending it back over the net.

BRINGING IT TOGETHER Rotating ■ Switching causes people to forget their actual rotation
