Active – Subject + Verb + Object Passive – Object + Verb + Subject Active – I complete the work. Passive – The work is completed by me.
Main Rule- Be + V 3 = Passive form Be- is, am, are, was, were Active- The shopkeeper sells the vegetables. Passive- The vegetables are sold by the shopkeeper.
Changes: V 1 - is/am/are + V 3 V 2 - was/were + V 3 Is/am/are/was/were + V 1+ing - is/am/are/was/were + being + V 3 Has/Have/Had + V 3 Has/Have + been + V 3 -
Will/shall/ would/should/can/could/may/might/ought to/is to/am to/are to/was to/were to/has to/have to/had to + be + V 3
E. g. Active- They like chocolates. Passive - Chocolates are liked by them. Active- The students are answering the questions. Passive – The questions are being answered by the students. Active- We need to send these items. Passive- These items need to be sent by us.
If the sentence is on this structure-There + Verb + Noun(Subject) + Infinitive verb(To + V 1) It should be changed into-There + Verb + Noun(Subject) + to be + V 3
Active- There is nothing to take. Passive- There is nothing to be taken. Active- There is nothing to do. Passive – There is nothing to be done.
If the sentence is on this structure- • It + Verb + Noun + Infinitive (to + V 1) + Object It should be changed into- • It + Verb + Noun + for + Object + to be + V 3
Active- It is time to inform the chief minister. Passive – It is time for the chief minister to be informed. Active- It is time to launch the trailer. Passive – It is time for the trailer to be launched.
If the sentence is in Imperative sentence: • Main verb + Object It should be changed into- • Let + Object + to be + V 3
Active- Open the door. Passive- Let the door to be opened. Active- Keep your books inside the box. Passive – Let your books to be kept inside the box.
If the sentence is based on Request, Order, suggestion, etc. It can also be changed into. Active- Respect your teachers. Passive- Your teachers should be respected. Passive- You are advised to respect your teachers.
If the sentence is based on this structure: - • Let + Indirect Object + V 1 + Direct Object It should be changed into: • Let + Direct Object + be + V 3 + by + Indirect Object
Active- Let me touch this object. Passive- Let this object be touched by me. Active- Let me do this work. Passive- Let this work be done by me.
If the sentence is in Interrogative form • Question word + Helping Verb + Subject + Main Verb + Object? It should be converted into- • Question word +Helping Verb + Object + Be + V 3 + by + Subject?
Active- Can you complete this work? Passive- Can this work be completed by you? Active- When can you complete this work? Passive- When can this work be completed by you? Active- Who can complete this work? Passive- By whom can this work be completed?
Use 'At' when you find these verbs in the passive sentences. Surprised, Astonished, Shocked, Alarmed, Disappointed, Displeased. Active- His condition alarmed me. Passive – I was alarmed at his condition.
Use 'to' with the verbs: - 'Known' and 'Obliged' Active- I know you. Passive- You are known to me. Use 'with' with these verbs : - Pleased, Satisfied, Disgusted, Impressed, Annoyed. Active- Your work has pleased me. Passive- I have been pleased with your work.
Use 'In' with these verbs: Interested, Consisted and contained. Active- This job interests me. Passive- I am interested in this job. Active- This book contains many errors Passive – Many errors are contained in this book.
