VOCABULARY WORDS Desertification Desert Farming Aquaponics Algae Farming
VOCABULARY WORDS • Desertification • Desert Farming • Aquaponics • Algae Farming a)Transesterification b)Chlorella (freshwater) c)Seaweed/Kelp (saltwater)
Desertification • We Use the water • Global Warming • So, deserts are spreading!
Desertification
Why don’t we just farm the desert • Bad soils • Temperatures a) Hot in day b) Cold at night! • Water a) Lack of availability! b) Evaporation rates are very high! c) Salt, pesticide, & herbicide buildup! • Too much sun – Plants get Sun Burned
Desertification • Using more water than we have! • Central Valley California
Even with all those problems 1. We are doing a bunch of it! 2. Uses Vast Quantities of water in the desert!
Hydroponics in the desert 1. Soil - Doesn’t use any soil! *Also, produces 5 times the harvest per acre!
Hydroponics in the desert 2. Temperatures: a)Use heatsinks to cool during day b)Use heatsinks to warm the greenhouse at night
Hydroponics in the desert 3. Water: a)Well, still a bit of a problem. b)However, it uses 85% less water than conventional farming c)Greenhouse prevents a lot evaporation d)No pesticides or herbicides are used e)100% of fertilizers are used f)Salt removal systems are available (reverse osmosis and condenser systems)
AQUAPONICS • Is just like hydroponics, but instead of purchasing fertilizer you instead buy fish food? • Well , just how is that going work?
AQUAPONICS • The fish live in the water, they poop & pee in the water. • Well, where else are they supposed to do it? • The water, poop, & pee mixture goes to the plants. They love it! • They eat the waste out of the water, making the water clean for the fish ; )
AQUAPONICS • When the fish grow in the tanks until… • Well, we get some meat to go with our vegetables.
How much of the world is desert? How many deserts border our oceans?
The Sahara desert is the size of US! Getting bigger! It’s surrounded by Salt water…
Name one single food source that can supply ALL of the calories, protein, fats, nutrients, and vitamins that you need to survive? • Some people name milk. However, if you tried it you would end up with some serious health problems! • But eat only Chlorella Algae = you would be in good health!
IMPORTANT NOTE! • The Term Algae is a very broad term and means any numerous species! • Some of them are TOXIC, and most freshwater species of “algae” are toxic! • Can even kill the fish!
How do you grow Algae • Need a spot to grow it. • Can be a desert. • Matter of fact a hot sunny desert is a great place! • Need lots of water, Oh no! Wait a minute don’t worry many can grow in salt water (SEA WATER) 70% of the plant is covered with that ; )
Seaweeds / Kelp • Seaweeds are saltwater forms of algae. • Most species are edible and safe to eat. • It does takes several years to grow, it doesn’t grow as fast as freshwater algae.
How do you grow Algae • • Grow it Harvested it Dried it Used in countless products including as a food source.
Algae Needs • Sea Water – have to power them. • Growing Space • Sun • Heat • Nutrients – Bio Wastes / Fertilizers • CO 2 Gas Products From Algae • • • O 2 Gas Clean Water Foods: Carbs Proteins Fats in the form of oils Vitamins & Minerals Or can process into: Fuel Oil Cleaning Products Proteins
Oil from Algae • We can extract fuel oil and other products from algae. • The more CO 2 we give it the better it does, the algae LOVE IT!
Transesterification • Remove oil from the algae • Process the oil: using a sodium hydroxide and methanol mixture, and you get out a biodiesel, glycerol, and proteins.
Grown in Large Farms • Grows VERY fast!
Or, on smaller scale and it can even be done on rooftops
Algae in products today!
Varieties: of flavors & products • Chlorella – literally you could live on it and nothing else! • Very complete nutrition.
Chlorella • • Is a freshwater algae. 45% Protein 20% Fat 20% Carbohydrate 5% Fiber 10% Vitamins and Minerals IMPORTANT NOTE: Most freshwater algae are TOXIC!!!!
