Teaching Vocabulary • All nine Marzano effective teaching strategies may include vocabulary instruction. (And probably should!) • It’s not the use of strategies, but the effectiveness of their use.
Marzano’s 6 Steps
Steps 1 -3 • Teacher example and explanation • Student examples and explanations – Must be allowed time to work with concept • Activity 2 - Think, Pair, Share <timer> – What is the most important word in your discipline? – Use your “get attention” strategies to reclaim their attention: • “Raise your hand if you can hear me. ” • “Give me five” countdown. • Call & Response (“Science”, “Rocks”)
Step 4 -6 • Student-created images • Vocabulary processing strategies • Review games • Continue to work back-and-forth between these steps as needed to cement learning. • Work these steps into all areas of your lesson: – warm ups, exit tickets, homework, fillers – lab process, class work, projects
Two Favorites • Foldables (especially those by Dinah Zike) – Activity 3 - Foldable – Fold a sheet of paper into 16 squares. – In the boxes, list the word, write the definition, list an example & sketch. – OR, you can list the word and characteristics such as structures, functions, measurements, etc. – Cut apart, trade, sort. – Activity 4 – Capsule Vocabulary – Examine provided images. – Use vocabulary words to describe what is happening in the image.
