Vocabulary Learning Tips Techniques for Learning Vocabulary • Have a notebook you put words in that your hear all the time • Put a star beside every word you learn from your vocabulary • Say the words out lots of times • Make up new sentences using the words you are using (have a teacher check them!) • Post it notes: put important words you want to learn (in French and English) on your fridge/mirror etc. • Get someone to test you • Write out 5 times, cover up and write it again. If correct go to next word, if not spelt correctly write another 5 times and repeat • Read/Listen to French (on topic that you are studying ) • Smart Flashcards: one side write the English, on the other the word you want to learn, and the word in a sentence. School Trips We aim to give your child at least one chance to go on a Foreign trip. Recently we have had successful trips to Paris and to the North of France, we have also looked into going to Morocco and to Louisiana. Our aim will be to offer a trip for your child at some point between S 3 and S 6. We also take trips to see films, exhibitions and language immersion days. Top Tips • • • Set realistic goals: 15 words an hour is maximum Aim for 5 words in 15 -20 minutes. S 1 Course Modern Languages • The Modern Languages Department has 3 members of staff and offers French, with a possibility of some Spanish being taught. At present the department consists of: The Modern Languages Department has worked closely with all cluster Primary schools to ensure that your children will progress while moving from Primary to Secondary. In S 1 your child will study the following: • School • Regular Verbs • Leisure • Astérix and Obélix (Film study) • House and Home • Individual and group projects Homework The Modern Languages Department expects that all children will be learning vocabulary every week. This is the main homework pupils will have. In S 1 pupils are expected to spend 5 -10 minutes learning vocabulary every 2 nights. There are some hints in this leaflet to help your child to be as effective as possible in learning vocabulary. Pupils will also be expected at different times throughout the year to do Reading and Writing tasks and also in preparing for Writing and Talking assessments.
