VOCABULARY ACQUISITION Why is it important? How can I improve it?

With your shoulder partner, brainstorm a list of reasons why it is important to have an enhanced vocabulary base. You have 3 minutes. WHY?

With your table group, make a list of ways you can build your vocabulary base. You have 3 minutes. HOW?

Various researchers agree that, “Reading comprehension depends upon the meaning readers give words. The more vocabulary words students know, the better they are able to comprehend. A large vocabulary opens students up to a wider range of reading materials. A rich vocabulary also improves students' ability to communicate through speaking, listening, and writing” (as cited by vocabulary-z. com, nd). HERE’S WHY?

The two we will be previewing today are: Vocabulary. com – Select the correct definitions and move on to more difficult words. Unlock achievements along the way. Instructional games software is much like Drill and Practice software, in that students can progress at their own pace. One of the major differences is, now instead of just progressing through the words…you are gaming! INSTRUCTIONAL GAMES SOFTWARE

The two we will be previewing today are: Words and Their Stories – Answer questions, decipher analogies, etc. to build points. But, beware, if you answer wrong the jack-in-the-box will spring. Bubble Fun SAT Vocabulary – Catch definition bubbles in a net. The more you know, the faster they will go. INSTRUCTIONAL GAMES SOFTWARE

You will now have a chance to try all four of the programs. Number off in your table group, 1, 2, 3, 4 Starting with your assigned program, you will “try it out” until the timer rings. Then, in clockwise fashion, you will use the next program on the list, and so on until you have tried all 4 programs. GIVE THEM A TRY!
