Claim noun Defintion: An arguable statement. Ø There are three primary types of persuasive claims: Ø Claims of fact assert that something is true or not true. Ø Claims of value assert that something is good or bad, more or less desirable. Ø Claims of policy assert that one course of action is superior to another. In rational or logical arguments, all three types of claims must be supported by facts and evidence.

Reading Closely • Reading text closely close reading is a careful and purposeful reading. Cesar Chavez • A Mexican American, Chavez became the best known Latino American civil rights activist, and was strongly promoted by the American Labor Movement, which was eager to enroll Hispanic members. • His public-relations approach to unionism and aggressive but nonviolent tactics made the farm workers' struggle a moral cause with nationwide support. • By the late 1970 s, his tactics had forced growers to recognize the UFW as the bargaining agent for 50, 000 field workers in California and Florida.

• Founded in 1962 by Cesar Chavez, the United Farm Workers of America is the nation's first successful and largest farm workers union currently active in 10 states. The UFW continues to organize in major agricultural industries across the nation.
