What are Visual Symbols? • Representations of direct reality, which comes in the form of symbols. • Don’t see real things but symbols.

Examples of Visual Symbols • • Drawings Cartoons Strip drawings Diagrams Charts Graphs Maps

Drawings • Free-hand sketching. • Correctly represents real thing.


Cartoons • Brings novelty. • A perfect cartoon needs no caption.


Strip Drawings • Also known as comic strips. • Educational and entertaining.


Diagrams • “any line drawing that shows arrangement and relations as of parts to the whole. . . ´´ (Dale, 1969)

Charts • A diagrammatic representation of relationships among individuals within an organization. • Information in the form of table.

ASSIGNMENT • On a short bond paper, research and give ONE example of a visual symbol used in teaching or in the classroom that’s NOT mentioned in today’s discussion. Define and explain how it differs from the others.
