Iwo Jima Memorial • Picture taken on the Fourth of July • Built in 1951 • Bears two inscriptions: • “In honor and memory of the men of the United States Marine Corps. who have given their lives to their country since 10 November 1775 • “Uncommon Valor Was a Common Virtue”
Iwo Jima Memorial • It was made to look like the picture taken at the top of Mount Suribachi on Febuary 23 rd, 1945 • The men are thirty-two feet tall and the flag pole is sixty feet long • The men in the photo are Sgt. Michael Strank, Cpl. Harlon Block, Pfc. Franklin Sousley, Pfc. Rene Gagnon, Pfc. Ira Hayes, and Pm 2 John Bradley
Appeal • This picture has an emotional appeal. • It evokes a feeling of extreme pride and patriotism. • What emotion(s) does this picture make you feel?
Color • There a lot of blue and white in the background because of the fireworks. • The statue is cast in bronze but the current lighting in the picture makes it look gray. • The flag is waving in the wind and looks like a red blur.
Audience • The intended audience is those who were visiting Washington, D. C. and the memorials there. • The real audience is everybody who has seen the memorial to those who have lost a loved one who served to those who actually served
Technique • The photographer used the very little lighting of the fireworks and the flood light to create the mood of the picture
