This is Not My Hat demonstrates outstanding artistic visual elements throughout the book. The book is true to its picture book categorization and is dependent on its visual elements for storytelling and plot points. The simplistic shapes and dark colors draw the reader’s eye to notice movement, specifically the big fish’s eye as it awakens, understands its hat is missing, and realizes that the little fish stole it. Artistic Elements Klassen, J. (2012). This is not my hat. Somerville, MA: Candlewick Press.
In My Teacher is a Monster, the illustrations are listed as “India ink, watercolor, gouache, and pencil on paper with digital composition and color. ” However, what makes the illustrations truly unique are the simplistic shapes and colors. The images appear to be construction paper cut outs, which makes them even more appealing to child and adults readers alike. Illustration Media Brown, P. (2014). My teacher is a monster. New York: Little Brown Books.
Book making at its finest is artfully depicted from the pages to the details in Mirror, Mirror. New York: Clarion
The imagination of a disobedient child creates an unforgettable setting in Maurice Sendak’s, Where the Wild Things Are. Where the wild things are. New York: Harper Collins.
It’s a Book is perfectly themed for today’s generation of tech savvy children. In its simplistic subtlety, It’s a Book shows kids that while gadgets and gizmos are great, a book is equally engrossing. Themes are generally time resistant, but It’s a Book puts a new spin on an old idea. Theme Smith, L. (2011). It’s a book. New York: Roaring Brook.
Olivia the pig is truly a standout in style with her trademark red accents and striped clothing splashed against the contrasting background.
