COURSE OBJECTIVE • Welcome to high school! This course is English 9. It is designed to provide a successful learning environment and is taught in accordance with the California English Common Core Standards for grade 9. The class is designed to help the students become critical thinkers through analyzing various types of texts. The curriculum set forth is to educate students on themes that correspond with Project Based Learning that is specific to the VAPA magnet.

ESSAYS/ WRITTEN CONTENT: ESSAYS ARE AN ESSENTIAL PART OF AN ENGLISH CLASS. BEING ABLE TO CONVEY THOUGHTS AND ANALYSIS IS THE KEY TO THE DEVELOPMENT IN THE CLASS. • 45% of grade is dedicated to Essays and Written Content • Essays will vary from in class to take home • In class essays will be written in blue or black ink • Take home essay will be typed with certain requirements set forth by the teacher.

CLASSWORK • 30% of grade is dedicated to student’s class work • All class

CLASSWORK • 30% of grade is dedicated to student’s class work • All class work must be done in student’s notebook and in class. • Class work is 10 points per entry and is all or nothing. Students must do all the work thoroughly to receive credit. • Notebook must be brought to class every day. It is the student’s responsibility to know when they have English. I will not allow students to go to their locker to get their stuff. • Notebooks will be checked every couple of weeks. I will not grade loose papers. Notebooks are expected to be neat and organized.

READING • 25% of grade is dedicated to Reading: Accelerated Reader, Reader’s notebook and

READING • 25% of grade is dedicated to Reading: Accelerated Reader, Reader’s notebook and silent reading. • Silent Reading is the first 10 -20 minutes of class. During that time student’s are to read an appropriate leveled reading book and complete their reader’s notebook. • Points will be given randomly for silently reading. Students don’t know when I’m going to give them points so they should compared to class. • At the end of each grading period students will take a book test on accelerated reader, a school wide adopted program. It computes student’s reading levels as well as their growth. As well as turn in their readers notebook.

ATTENDANCE • Attendance is pivotal to your child’s success • If a students is absent it is their responsibility to make up any missing work by the next class period. • LAUSD policy states students should not be absent more than 7 full day or 28 periods per school year.
