Visitors Policy ¨ Students may entertain an overnight guest in their room at any time for a maximum of two successive nights, with all the roommates' consent. ¨. All overnight guests must be registered with the guard and Building Manager ¨ The sponsor of a guest is accountable for the action of the guest and for the official guest registration.

Visitors Policy ¨ Residence hall staff and security have the right to refuse entrance or ask guests to leave if they are causing disruption to the community environment. There is no additional charge for the guest in a student's room for two days. ¨ It is the basic right of every student to have privacy in his/her assigned room. No student should at any time feel obligated to relinquish that right. Visitors should be mutually agreed among roommates. Any person visiting the room must have the consent of all roommates, any one of whom may ask the visitor to leave in the interest of preserving privacy.

Sexual Offence Policy ¨ It is a policy of the American University in Bulgaria that no member of the University community may sexually harass another. In accordance with its policy of complying with nondiscriminating laws, the American University in Bulgaria regards freedom from sexual harassment as an individual employee and student right. Violation of this policy will be subject to disciplinary action. Consenting relationships may result in sexual harassment under this policy. ¨ Sexual harassment of either employees or students is a violation of United States Federal Laws.

Drug and Alcohol Abuse Policy ¨ Drug policy ¨ The possession, use, or distribution of illegal drugs as defined by both Bulgarian and American Law is prohibited at any time on University property. Employees known to possess, use, or distribute illegal drugs are liable to public law enforcement sanctions and University disciplinary

Safety Tips ¨ When visiting the Residence Halls, guests from outside the University must leave their passports at the guard's desk and tell the guard on duty what room they will be in. AUBG students visiting another residence hall should sign into the guard's register.

Some Important Tips for Your Safety • • • • Report any concerns to the guards, as soon as detected. Ask the guards for assistance with the local police department. Always make sure you register your overnight guests with the building manager. Always lock your room. Keep your valuables in a secure place (the University has no legal liability for thefts). Obtain your roommate's consent for having visitors and/or overnight guests. In cases of physical abuse, assault, harassment, threats, excessive noise, public intoxication, and boisterousness contact your RAs, the guard on duty, and/or the building manager. In case of fire emergency, use the fire extinguishers and contact the guards. Carry wallets and passports in secure non-visible place. Do not walk alone after dark. Do not leave your belongings (backpacks, purses, etc. ) unattended. Be cautious in unfamiliar environments. Do not give the keys from your room or copies of them to anybody.

Burglary ¨ • • • Holidays time is when your property is most vulnerable-so pay particular attention to the security of your room during the vacations, as well as during the finals week because students tend to be more absent-minded about security issues when they have so much tough studying to do. Take anything valuable (computers, stereos, etc. ) with you during any holiday period. If you know somebody you can trust who is staying in Blagoevgrad over the holidays, leave any valuable items with them (if you are not able to take them with you). Keep valuable items away from windows and out of view.

Basic crime prevention tips • If you are living off-campus, be careful when you are a rent a lodging. Look at the door and window locks, and check if there is a good level of security. Check also if the individual rooms have locks on them. • Use any internal locks wisely, especially if you're having a party: remember you don't necessarily know your "friends" as well as you might think.

Thefts at the university can be categorized into three types ¨Main Building ¨Residence Halls ¨Personal

Main Building • Thefts from the main building within the university are an ongoing problem. The university relies on staff and students to report any suspicious people or circumstances as quickly as possible. • If you see anything suspicious let the security know straight away. • Don't allow people enter any building with controlled access without a valid ID card. • If you believe a crime is being committed let a member of the security staff know. If you want the crime to be officially reported to the local Police Department, the guard will notify them.

Residence Halls • • • Again, don't let a person into buildings with controlled access, without a valid ID card. Whenever you leave your room, make sure it's locked. Thieves have been known to use tricks such as telling students a phone call is waiting for them and then stealing items from their rooms. Pick up bank cards and check books directly from the local branch, many cards are stolen from the mail system, particularly in the residence halls. If you see someone suspicious, let the guard on duty know. If you think a crime is being committed, let the security guard know. He will notify the police if you want theft to be reported.

Personal • • • Many thefts occur when people are out for the evening or at parties. Never leave jackets or bags lying around. Always keep your belongings with you. If you leave them in some room or an office, don't leave credit cards or anything valuable in them. The library, and especially the coat-check area, is particularly vulnerable to thefts. If you are working or studying in the library, never leave your bag, purse, wallet, or anything valuable unattended. The library is open to anyone, and is often the target of opportunist thieves.

Personal Safety At AUBG, violent and sexual attacks on students are rare. However it is important to follow some common-sense rules and take minimal precautions. If the worst happens and you are attacked • • • Scream and shout. If you have one, set off your personal alarm. Get away as quickly as possible. Always ring the police immediately after getting away. Do not leave it until you get home. It is important that you contact the police/the guards at the emergency phone (police: 166, AUBG security guards: 073 -88100, 073 - 80391) immediately. If there is a vehicle involved, try to make a mental note of the registration. Write it down as quickly as possible, and hand it to the police upon their arrival. Try to remember the description of the offender. If you feel unable to talk to the police, talk to a friend or the Counseling Center stuff.

What men can do to help • If you are walking in the same direction as a woman, be aware of the effect you may have on her, walk on the other side. • Don't sit too close on a train or a bus, and avoid staring. • Realize how threatening actions such as staring, whistling, passing comments and jostling can be, particularly when you are a group.

To make sure nothing bad happens to you • • Never hitch-hike or accept lifts from people you do not know. Try not to be out alone, particularly at night. Prearrange to go home with a friend. Always have some money in case you need to get a taxi. Keep the number of a reliable taxi company with you. Always sit behind the driver's seat. When the taxi arrives, check if it is the one you ordered. If in doubt, don't get in.

If you have to travel alone on public transport • • • Try to stay away from isolated bus stops. On a bus, sit near the driver. On a train, take a compartment where there are several other people. Avoid taking shortcuts through dark alleys, parks or streets. Get a personal attack alarm. They are available at the specialized shops and firms. Make sure it is one of those that continue working even if dropped. Carry it in your hand with the cord around your wrist.

If you regularly go jogging • Vary your route and stick to main roads with pavements, which are well lit and busy with people who can see you. In this aspect, the alley to Bachinovo park , as well as the route from Scaptopara to the graveyard (along the river) could prove dangerous. • Remember, if you use a walkman, you are less aware of those around you and of the traffic

If you think you are being followed • • Check by crossing the street and see if they follow. If they do, then cross back again to check. If you are still worried, then get to the nearest public place, a shop, pub, or anywhere with lights on, and call the police on 166, or the emergency phone 88 -100. Avoid using an enclosed pay phone, which you could be trapped in. If someone attempts to steal something from you, don't resist. Your safety comes first. You can help by remembering what they look like. Ring the police immediately, pass on their description and in which they direction they went off.

Driving • Make sure you have enough petrol and some money • Keep the doors locked • Avoid leaving bags, mobile phones, etc. on display within the car. • If someone tries to flag you down, drive on until you come to a service station, or some other area busy with people, and call the police. • Never pick up hitch-hikers.
