Visible Learning SESSION 1 – EFFECT SIZE
Your pilots. . .
Learning Intention & Success Criteria Learning Intention Through the active participation in this session you will understand the use of effect size to determine key effects in schools re: student achievement. You will also make links between key effects and what happens in Horsham College Success criteria: You will be able to articulate key drivers of student achievement & factors that are less successful
What is ‘effect size’? The effect size is the measure of change of students’ understanding and/or capabilities. Dr John Hattie, analysis (across 750+ meta – analysis, 50, 000 studies, 200+ students) determined the average effect size from one year to the next is 0. 40 Note: this doesn’t mean that all students are at the same level Anything above this 0. 40 is worth investing out time in!
What is ‘effect size’? Hattie looked at hundreds of effects: eg use of technology, learning styles, TV, direct instruction, one to one intervention, effect of principals, concept mapping, homework, team teaching, types of feedback, teaching to the test, parental involvement etc etc
Scale of effect size “Effect size allows us to move beyond the simplistic, ‘does it work or not? ’ to the far more sophisticated, “How well does it work in a range of contexts? ”

Visible Learning – where to from here As teachers we should want to see achievement in students. We need to be reflecting on what is working, and also what isn’t. We need to be analysing the achievement of students (assessment tasks) and actively reflect on where to improve. Visible Learning – this is not new, we are not replacing Powerful Learning, simply enhancing it
