Visible Learning at St Bernards Model of Pedagogy
Visible Learning at St Bernard‘s
Model of Pedagogy
We believe That all children can progress and have success.
Visible learning is all about children taking ownership for their learning. It is the result of the research undertaken by John Hattie to understand what provides the most success in learning. It is based on over 68, 000 studies and 25 million students. John Hattie defines a Visible learner as students who can ◦ ◦ ◦ Articulate what they are learning Explain the next steps in their learning Set learning goals See errors as opportunities for further learning Know what to do when they are stuck Seek feedback
Growth Mindset Most students have developed their mindset by the age of 8. We need to view achievement as changeable and ‘Be prepared to be surprise”. Promoting a growth mindset with students gives them the confidence to believe that no matter where they are on the achievement ladder, with hard work, perseverance and effort they can improve and experience success. A growth mindset is needed to get out of the pit.
Growth mindsets
Stuck like glue? What will you do? Use your growth mindset!
Learning Dispositions As a staff we have spent time actively discussing what the dispositions are that students need to be a successful learner. From a long list and after much discussion around semantics the staff decided on the following. Management, Organisation, Persistence, Reflection, Innovation. To make them more interesting to children we devised Super Powers as the way of teaching the children about how to be a successful learner.
Mario the manager ~ I am ready to learn. I know what I am learning and why I’m organised and ready to learn I listen to instructions I focus on the task Izzy the Innovator ~ I think outside the box. I am a problem solver I am creative in all areas of my learning I think of different ways to reach a goal I take risks in my learning Rex the Reflector ~ I take time to think. I ask for feedback from my teacher and classmates I can traffic light my learning I use my growth mindset I check my work
Ollie the Owner ~ I take charge of my learning. I know my goals I know when I have achieved a goal I know my next step I ask questions Penny Persistent - I tough it out. I know what to do when I am in the pit. I try before I seek help I will learn from my mistakes I will give myself time to learn I will not give up
WALT and WILF Learning Intentions and Success Criteria Students need to know what they are learning and what is needed in the task for them to be successful. Learning Intentions / WALT Success Criteria / WILF
Feedback Hattie found that Feedback was one of the most effective agents in student learning. Feedback can be oral or written and speaks to the completed work. It notes the success, analyses for future learning, mistakes being made that can be rectified and provides the next step for the student in their learning.
Student Launch of Visible Learning We will be have an official Visible Learning launch with the children. It will consist of a series of rotation activities which highlight the need to use the Learning Powers!
