Dare Stones Brenau has been in possession of several stones that for many years were thought to hold the key to the Lost Colony of Roanoke in North Carolina. The stones, carved with messages in Elizabethan English, were believed to have been left by Eleanor Dare after she disappeared from the colony. They have since been deemed forgeries. Brenau’s most famous resident Agnes Brenau’s most famous resident. Brenau legend holds that in the late 1920 s, a student named Agnes hanged herself on the site of Pearce Auditorium because she was not selected by the sorority of her choice. Legend holds that she spent her final moments in the school's old natatorium (in the basement of Pearce Auditorium). She hoisted a robe to a pole, tied a hangman's noose, and jumped off the edge of the pool. Since that fateful day, Agnes has appeared as flickering blue light and then as a young woman in a mid calf-length white dress. In 1987, her story became the topic of a play, "The Legend of Agnes, " that was performed during Halloween. Wilkes Hall The first building built on campus was built in 1878 and has served as a dormitory, cafeteria, and classroom. The original two-story Queen Anne structure featured a semi-circular porch with balustrades and Victorian bracketing, but it was destroyed by a storm in 1947 then rebuilt. Rumored to be where Agnes lived on Campus.

Parking Where to park The good news is that unlike the large state schools you don’t have to park in a commuter lot miles from campus, take 2 buses then walk a half mile in the rain. The bad news is that there probably won’t be parking place at the door of the building where you will have class. In Gainesville there is ample street parking near most buildings, and there is always room at the commuter lot beside the trustee library. (Spaces at the dorms and sorority houses are for residential students). A Brenau parking sticker will be included with your tuition statement.
