PLACE VALUE & FACE VALUE v Place value is the value of each digit in a number based on its position v Face value is the digit itself regardless of its position in the number v Example: Let’s find the place value and face value of digits in the number 7, 945

FORMING GREATEST AND SMALLEST NUMBERS Greatest 4 digit numbers: Arrange the digits in descending order Smallest 4 digit numbers: Arrange the digits in ascending order. If any of the digits is 0 we put it in the hundreds place Example 1: Form greatest and smallest 4 digit number using the digits 6, 1, 5, 9 Greatest Number: Smallest Number: Th H T o 9 5 1 6 6 Example 2: Form smallest 4 digit number using the digits 7, 0, 1, 8 Smallest Number: Th H T o 1 7 8 0
SUCCESSOR & PREDECESSOR v Successor: A number that comes just after a given number is called its successor. Successor = Given Number + 1 Example : i. Successor of 3459 is 3459 + 1= 3460 ii. Successor of 9999 is 9999 + 1= 10, 000 ( 10, 000 is the smallest 5 Digit number) v Predecessor: A number that comes just before a given number is called its predecessor. Predecessor = Given Number - 1 Example : i. Predecessor of 2678 is 2678 - 1= 2677 ii. Predecessor of 10, 000 is 10, 000 - 1= 9999 ( 9999 is the greatest 4 Digit number)
COMPARING NUMBERS v Rule 1: DIFFERENT NUMBER OF DIGITS If two or more numbers to be compared do not have the same number of digits, the number with more number of digits is greater. Example 3456 > 456 v Rule 2 : SAME NUMBER OF DIGITS When the number of digits is the same in two numbers, then we start comparing the first digit from left in each number. If it is the same in both the numbers, we move to the second digit, and so on. Example: 3456 > 3356 > 3346 > 3336 and so on.
