How Are They Different Than Live Interviews? • Often part of an initial screening • Sometimes they are automated/recorded rather than live • Technological challenges more likely to disrupt • Less opportunity for more personal interaction, to show your personality, or to read people’s expressions • Can help alleviate in-person feelings of stress
Check Technology • Check beforehand to make sure all technology is working properly • Familiarize yourself with common programs: Zoom, Skype, Google Hangout, Cisco Webex, etc. • Test out technology and practice with a friend or family member • You can also mute audio and dial in over the phone if concerned about internet speed.
Some Things to Consider • Sound is amplified through the microphone, make sure there are no distracting sounds or noises • Your background should be clean and professional • Consider lighting - be sure there is no bright light source behind you. • Raise camera to be eye level and look into the camera - this shows eye contact • Look at the other person talking, not yourself
Research • Where to look: company’s website, Glassdoor, Linked. In, social media • What to look for: Mission statement or values, interview information, news items, interviewer’s background, like and follow • Research will help you answer questions and create your own questions to ask during the interview • If you have notes, prop them up behind your screen so you can reference them without looking down
Use the STAR Method • When answering interview questions, be sure to follow the STAR method • • Situation- set the scene Task- what was the issue or objective Action- how did you resolve the issue Result- what were the results of the actions • • Tell me about a time when…? What would you do if…? • Answer like you are telling a story • Great for questions like
Situation: challenges, problems, concerns, issues, conflicts Tasks: your responsibilities and roles in the situation Actions: focusing on your behavior and the skills you used Results: outcomes, accomplishments, what you contributed and learned, how you were effective
Practice Makes Perfect • Practice with a friend or family member to get yourself comfortable and confident • Make an appointment with a Peer Educator to do a mock interview • Mock interviews are held over phone or Zoom • Schedule an appointment here: https: //arizona. joinhandshake. com/appointments /new
Be Professional • Appropriate dress • Might depend on type of job and/or position • Appropriate background • Respectful - give them your attention and maintain eye contact • Clear & concise answers • Whatever applies to in person interviews applies here too!
Ask Questions • Allows the employer to see your interest and shows engagement • Some questions could be: • • • What is a typical day like in this position? How is this department trying to achieve company goals? What is to be expected of me within the first 6 months if I am hired for this position? Can you tell me about the work environment and culture? What has been your experience at this company/organization? What do you most enjoy about working in your position? Come with a few questions based on your own research!
After the Interview • Send a thank you email • Reminds employer of candidacy and allows you to reiterate your interest in the position • Formatting • • 1 -2 paragraphs Remind them of your qualifications • • Send within 24 hours Can use mail or email, email is fastest and probably preferred • Timing
