Director: Jonathan Glazer Virtual Insanity was directed by Jonathan Glazer in 1996. Jonathan Glazer is an award winning English film maker who started out directing theatre and making film and television trailers, after studying theatre design at Nottingham Trent University. Before directing virtual insanity, Jonathan directed three other music videos in the mid 90’s including artists: Massive Attack, Blur and Radiohead; who all take the side step route to alternative pop. He was named MTV director of the year in 1997.
Style & Conventions Suiting the style that the band represents as a British funk and acid jazz band, the style of the music video incorporates both the performance and abstract styles, but largely focusing on the ‘weirdness of the illusion’; thus making it stand out! Conventions of a music video with the styles added in this video include: • Lip Syncing • Dancing • Fashion appropriate for the time it was made & target audience • CGI • Optical illusions
Meaning & Effectiveness Other than the political statements that the lyrics express, the visual images itself could be interpreted as one of many things such as the setting being in a morgue, on a spaceship, in a virtual game or in a top secret room where important files are kept. A metaphor for the world moving around whilst we sit in our living rooms.
