VIOLA SPOLIN BY: COGIE CELZO
VIOLA SPOLIN EARLY LIFE (1906 -1994) • Was raised in a theater loving family • Was originally trained to be a settlement worker • Her school focused on group leadership
VIOLA SPOLIN LATER LIFE • Her family influenced her to join theater • Her school also influenced her • She went to New York for a job but failed
ACCOMPLISHMENTS • served as a special consultant for Stills’ Story Theater • conducted workshops for TV sow casts • was an actress in “Alex in Wonderland”
WHAT SHE IS KNOWN FOR • Created techniques to help characters stay focused • Made improvisation • Made theater games • “Play the games you might find yourself in the unknown. Be intuitive. ”-Viola Spolin
THEATER GAMES • help actors connect with each other • help actors get in character • example: The Mirror and Gibberish
DEFINE IMPROVISATION • doing a play with no script • responding like you would normally • improvising is being not pretending
LESSON I LEARNED • I learned that you need to be prepared to give a believable improv. scene. I now know that there are exercises to warm you up for improvisation. I understand that improvisation is being the character, not pretending. It can also be hard to connect with your partner a times. I used to think that improvisation was just making a scene up but now I understand it is much harder.
