His transition When Van Gogh moved to Antwerp, it was there that he discovered and purchased Japanese prints. This is how and why his paintings changed so dramatically over the course of his career and many other painters at this time followed suit. He discovered color and texture his first example of his change of style from realism to Post-Impressionism was JAPONAISERIE: Flowering Plum Tree (1887).

Style Developing 1888 he moved to Arles, France, and he began painting local landscapes.

This is when he developed his famous swirling textural pattern of applying paint to canvas, layer upon layer while the alternating colors almost sparkle through the application of his brush strokes. His Illness He suffered from mental illness that allowed him to have manic episodes

His Illness He suffered from mental illness that allowed him to have manic episodes to work on is art work for days and days at a time with out breaking to sleep. We know that he suffered from Bi-polar disorder. He made so many paintings in the last few years of his life like, The Café Terrace on the Place du Forum, Arles, at Night (1888).

His Legacy Vincent Van Gogh lived the rest of his life in France until

His Legacy Vincent Van Gogh lived the rest of his life in France until he took his own life on July 29 1890. His extensive career consisted of making a total of 2000 artworks, 900 paintings, 1100 drawings, and his entire career he only sold one painting while he was alive. His most famous well know painting is The Starry Night (1889).

Assignment � � � � The assignment is to choose an artwork of Van Gogh as a guideline to start from for your impressionistic painting. It must NOT be copied, you must re-design. Think about color, texture, line, value, composition, economy, shape, movement, form, space. Homework bring in ideas for tomorrow. We will go over all ideas prior to starting. Canvas, acrylic paints, and brushes will be supplied. At the end of two weeks we will have an Art Show.
