VILLA VS ZAPATA VERY BRIEFLY
AREA • Villa – from the North (Chihuahua) • Zapata – from the South (Morelos)
REFORMIST DEMANDS • Villa – wants more power to working classes in mines and less (or no) power to foreign investors who own the mines and ranches of the north • Strong supporter of Madero, because Madero wants government reform • Wants less power in central government, more power to specific states (regionalism) • Zapata – wants the land back from the hacendados, wants a return to a traditional way of life for his village • Only supports Madero as long as he promises agrarian reform – when Madero does not keep promises, Zapata rebels against Madero also • Wants less power in central government, more power to specific states (regionalism)
STYLES OF FIGHTING • Villa • Zapata • Cowboy, rough and tumble, hearty, tends to rush in before planning (has lots of luck) • Quietly fierce, extremely focused on one specific goal (land being returned) • Has total loyalty of men because he is seen as a Robin Hood style leader • Soldiers fiercely loyal but tend to follow him because he is locally popular • Uses technology and weaponry very creatively • Not liked by other local leaders because he enjoys attention • Soldiers mostly very poor farmers, do not have advanced weapons • Unable to work with other leaders because he cares ONLY about one thing
WHAT DO THEY HAVE IN COMMON? • Extremely loyal to their soldiers • Large, very loyal following of the poor from their area of Mexico • Want government reform (specifically, smaller national government, and more power to the local governments) • Want land reform – both want land returned to Mexicans (but have different ideas of what that looks like) • Very mixed success (success in some small ways, but long-term both unsuccessful in their demands) • Assassinated by the federal government (Villa 1923, Zapata 1919)
