Viking beliefs When the Vikings came to Britain, they had their own pagan religion. They worshipped many gods. The old stories they told about gods, giants and monsters are known as Norse myths.
Odin • Odin is the world creator. • Asgard is the land of the gods. Midgard is the home of humans. Jotunheim is the land of giants. Odin has a wife called Frig.
Loki • Loki is a shape shifter. Loki is the mischievous 'trickster god'. By a trick, Loki caused the death of Balder. Loki is a trickster.
Freya • Freya was goddess of love and fertility. Freya wept golden tears when she was unhappy. Freya kissed all the goblins because she wanted a necklace.
Iduna • Iduna has a basket of golden apples. Iduna was locked in a tower by a giant. Iduna is the daughter of a dwarf called Svald.
Freyr • Freyr is the brother of Freya. Freyr has a pet boar.
Balder • Balder thought someone was going to kill him so his mother cast a spell on him so he wouldn’t get hurt. Then Loki got a sharp piece of mistletoe and gave it to an old man to throw at Balder and Loki killed Balder.
Frigg • Frigg is the wife of Odin. Friday is named after Frigg.
Thor • Thor had red hair. Thor ruled the skies, storms and thunder. Thor had iron gloves, a magic belt and a hammer. People loved Thor but did not trust Loki.
