History • 1983 VA Founded by scientist turned educationalist Dr. S. S. Kalbag with DBRT residential program. • 1987: IBT program pilot in formal school (1 day a week for grade 8, 9 10) • 1995: IBT extended to 15 schools increasing to 25 in 2001 • 2002: Fablab was set up with MIT collaboration • 2005: Partnership with 'LAHI' - Lend-A-Hand-India to set up 100 IBT Schools called PLAN 100 • 2006: 16 IBT schools with collaboration with EWB (Engineers without Borders) • 2011: Finishing School built from the award money of 100, 000 GBP in evolve competition organized by M/S GKN Sinter Metal. • 2014: IBT in 122 schools • 2016: Design Innovation center ready for operations
Location Pabal – 70 km from Pune, Maharashtra IBT program is implemented in [TBU] schools across 5 states (Maharashtra, Karnataka, Goa, Andhra Pradesh and Chattisgarh)
Asha Support Details DBRT (Diploma in Basic Rural Technology), 1 -year residential diploma program is main laboratory of education for VA. IBT program is its replication in schools. Asha mainly supports core staff salary and other expenses (Utilities, internet, Electricity, Water, Maintainance, Communication, Travel) at Pabal campus. • DBRT • • • DBRT instructor staff salary (7 Instructors) Admin staff salary (1 Accounts person) Kitchen staff salary (4 people) Utilities (e. g. electricity, water, internet) NIOS admission and exam fees
Support by other organizations • DBRT and short term courses – E-Boss, Tech Mahindra Foundation • Students are charged with Rs. 33000 fees that include food / lodging / tuition fees Students pays in small installment throughout the year. • Yearly Tuition fees – Rs. 12, 000 • Hostel and food expenses – Rs. 18, 000 (Rs. 1500 per month) • There are 50% students who apply for loan scholarship. They pay Rs. 33000 later on completion of course. Updates - DBRT • Total 56 students from Maharashtra, Chhattisgarh , Gujarat , Assam states took DBRT course in 2015 -16 batch. • 37 students are placed with different organizations. Others planning to do agriculture or family business at home. All are asked to write a blog. • DBRT students worked on project such as grey water recycling system for boys hostel , construction of new class-room , fabrication of carbike parking structure etc and earned community service of Rs. 1, 08, 013/-.
Updates - DBRT • DBRT batch 2016 -17 started on 10 th July 2016, with 48 new students. • Included advanced skill in CAD Design, Digital Fabrication, bakery products, webpublication & blog writing etc as an integral learning part of DBRT curriculum. • Each student is assigned to a mentor to meet with them once a week. This will help resolve personal and social difficulties among students. • English and language class in the evening. • Electric lab renovation with the support of M/S Megger pvt ltd. Installed donated fall ceiling of the lab. New tables and work benches are fabricated in ashram. Purchased new tools for the lab. • Students & staff did Shramdaan to celebrate independence day and planted 200+ saplings on the campus. • To celebrate republic day the team cleaned / repaired and painted Pabal bus stand public toilet. They did some civil construction work to repair ladies toilet and seating benches.
Updates - DBRT • Students from electrical department installed ‘Biometric attendance device’ which was a DST requirement for the vocational course providers. • Students in Home & Health department volunteered in ‘Health Check-up’ for 150+ disabled beneficiaries. • Students in workshop department constructed a bench from used PET bottles to learn recycling of plastic waste. They also constructed visitor’s car parking shed in campus from scrap material recovered from old classroom building. • 3 DBRT students Riaz, Amar and Sairaj participated in Science exhibition @ GMRT and present various projects viz. precision farming sensors, brick picking device, folding chair etc.

Updates - IBT • IBT is recognized as pre-vocational training program Level 1 and Level 2 under National Skills Qualification Framework (NSQF). IBT is named as ‘Multi skill Foundation Course (MFSC)’ under NSQF. • 13 schools has been identified as model IBT schools across Maharashtra. • Through 38 camps, total 538 students from 5 secondary schools had been given hands on practice of 3 D designing and 3 D printing. • L & T Info. Tech Ltd. Under its CSR dept signed MOU with Vigyan Ashram to support IBT program in 15 Schools Maharashtra. • Developed OER content for 12 activities and implemented in 4 School under Shikshan Pandhari project supported by MKF.
Updates - IBT • Rural Education and Development Society (READS- Jashpur) signed MOU as partner organization with Vigyan Ashram to implement IBT program with the Support of UNICEF. • Under the livelihood intervention through IBT program, instructors started 3 new enterprises i. e. Egg Incubator, Rice dehusking and food processing unit at Jashpur with the support of UNICEF. • IBT program completed five years in Chattisgarh. Unicef has made a documentary on the program. Ed’, a 3 days digital fabrication training workshop and enjoyed task of fabricating different animal shaped robots & racing them!
Updates - IBT • Students from 9 th standard at designed & fabricated ‘Seesaw water pump’. The idea is to fix this pump in School playground and pump water from well while playing. • Sindhudurg students made solar concentrator using old Dish TV antenna. The parabolic shape of TV antenna was used as reflector. • 54 students from Jynananda vidya mandir IBT schools attended 3 -D designing & printing workshops. • Students from New English School, Anavli (Pandharpur) learnt recycling waste while constructing seating bench from used PET bottles. • Students from 7 IBT porta-cabin Schools participated in YUVA JAGRAN SAMBHELAN at education city Jawanga (Dist-Dantewada)
Updates - IBT • First trial IBT lecture using Video Conference was done With Bhandari High School Bhandari, Malvan. Dr. Yogesh Kulkarni conducted class on ‘selecting project ideas’. We are planning to conduct online class every Saturday on various topics. • Dantewada Dist administration gave tender notice for providing technical support to IBT program. We are expecting order for implementation of IBT program in 17 schools of Dantewada, CG for year 2017 -18 • VA introducing IBT program in Cuddalore district, Tamilnadu in collaboration with Nalanda foundation with the support of ILFS. • VA submitted bid for establishing DIY lab in Dantewada. Soon, we are hoping to start DIY Lab in Dantewada. • Workshop on 'Public Biodiversity Register and Marathi Wikipedia Development at IBT School’ was conducted at JPNC

Updates – DST Short Term Courses • VA conducting computer courses for rural girls from pabal village imparting advanced web publishing & communication skills. With support of TATA Motors CSR, providing scholarship to 17 girl students to learn web publishing skill. They have started publishing articles on Marathi Wikipedia. • VA also entered into agreement with BOSCH CSR in their BRIDGE-Course initiative to provide employability skills to rural youths. • Surveyed rag pickers and shop owners to determine plastic dry waste generated in Pabal village per month. VA is brainstorming on ideas to collect and recycle this waste working with Greeny who have implemented a successful waste management in a crowded temple city of Shiradi. • Twenty girls from Jaishpur district of Chhattisgarh completed VA bakery course and started a bakery.
Updates – DST (Rural Technologies Development) Particular Rice- De-husking machine Introduction/ features/ Principles Machine is ready for large scale dissemination, 1 st version is released for production. �Number of units sold : - 10 (Farmers / SHG groups , social institutes). Number of manufacturer : 1 Municipal bio-waste Recycling Package developed for recycling of bio-waste in municipal areas including automated bio-drum for aerobic decomposition of waste, biological inoculations & racks –trays system for fast & safe composting. Presently technology is under pilot testing phase. WOMA-VIVUS FAB Incinerator 10 units are made for pilot testing. Design with improved energy efficiency & lower (Sanitary Pad incinerator) emissions are under fabrication. Drying technologies for vegetable / fruits / spices. Fab Projects (Digital Fabrication) A dryer with volume of 80 to 120 M 3 based on natural air convention & dehumidification principles. Pilot batches showed encouraging results with optimum color, flavor retention in dried products. XYZ axis plotter: Fab-lab can make various computer controlled gadgets using the plotter. Updates – DIC and Fab Academy • Purchased new 3 D printer for Fablab. • Six volunteer electronic project mentors from different companies in Pune met with Fab lab Team to discuss and guide the projects. • DIC team gave trial of ‘Bike driven oxygen generator’ to Genrich Membranes Pvt Ltd (Bhosari). The bike driven pump successfully generated target 6 Bar continues pressure with 35 LPM flow rate and 38 % oxygen level at output value. The prototype is approved by client for further refinements and delivery. • Trials started for ‘Bio-drum’ a self-rotating composting bin useful for housing societies with 10 -15 families. • DIC students successfully tested geodesic dome based ‘Ambient temperature dryer’. • Plastic moulding machine : Volunteer from USA, Thanh & Suvarna made an injection moulding machine from the DIY instruction from open source design. Updates – DIC and Fab Academy • Rangoli machine : Supriya demonstrated expertise to make X-Y-Z plotter through Rangoli machine. It was displayed during FAN 3. • 3 students visited Jaipur on 27 th -28 th Jan to meet ‘BMVSS’ to demonstrate progress of prosthetic project. • Vigyan Ashram's DIC project information is displayed on Science Express - coach No. 11. Xc • DIC fellow Mrs. Suvarna developed first working prototype of Smart Phone based ‘Environment sensors kit’. It is small unit fitted with 5 sensors (Temp, humidity, light, carbon dioxide and carbon monoxide) that can be connected to any smart phone using Bluetooth and displays real time reading of all these parameter. Qzc. • DIC students Meghraj & Neha attended soil microbiology theory & practical classes at botany department in Pune University. • A Survey was conducted for ‘Micro solar dome’(MSD), a solar lamp technology developed by NBRIT, Kolkata in 440 households in 23 villages. • In Design Innovation Centre (DIC), Four Interns completed their four months internship program and completed following projects – i)Solar Rava Roaster ii) Terrace garden iii) Solar Fridge for vegetable vendor iv) Bio-Drum (composter) • Fab academy project presentations were conducted on 16 th June 2017. They presented their project using Video conferencing to Dr. Neil Greshenfeld. • Fab-academy 2017 course started in Uan. It is 6 months program conducted by video conferencing lectures and on the job assignments in the Fab Lab. There are 70 labs around the world with 250+ students are participating in this year’s course. VA is center of Fab Academy and we have 7 students undergoing the course. Two students came all the way from Chandigarh and two from IIT Powai to learn digital fabrication.
Updates – DIC and Fab Academy • We have also received donation of $10, 000 from Fab foundation and Solidworks to establish computer lab equipped with design softwares. • Our alumni Pradnya, got selected as Supernod to conduct weekly review of students from regional fab labs in India on behalf of Fab Academy Co-ordination. • Workshop department student, Vinayak Thanekar, won IDEA price for his project ‘Brick picker’, a simple device to reduce hardship & brick breakage losses on construction site labours. We are planning to experiment new cost effective model of skills training for marginal communities in collaboration with Paoolwatt foundation. • Ms Cindy Kohtala from Alto University (Finland) visited VA for 1 week from 26 th February for studying Fablab. She is doing her post doctorate research on Fab Labs. • Mr. Pierre LABURTHE the Attaché for Innovation & Multimedia, French embassy visited VA on 15 th feb to understand our program on science & technology.
Updates – Entrepreneurship Development • Third year of Entrepreneurship Accelerator program with the support of NSTEDB (National Science and Technology Development Board) • 32 youths supported to start their enterprises. We have conducted training for 119 potential entrepreneurs in preparing business plan. • Helped 6 entrepreneurs to get micro finance loan from Rang. De. Collective loan amount was of Rs. 5, 20, 000/. • Total of 4 budding entrepreneurs were supported with 6 month fellowship during this year. They were provided mentorship and also opportunity to sharpen their skills. Sponsored by Praj Foundation. • 'Entrepreneurship development’ workshop was conducted at Pabal Campus. It was attended by 45 participants. Topics discussed : business planning, finance management, marketing, bankable proposal making etc. • Workshop on ‘Technology based rural start-up’ was conducted at Tal. Dapoli Dist. Ratnagiri) Total 40 budding entrepreneurs attended the workshop to learn soft skills in business management.
Updates – Entrepreneurship Development • Whatsapp campaign to encourage students to start enterprise. • Conducted STED entrepreneurship awareness session in 6 ITI / colleges • VA providing support to our alumni’s for preparing their business plan and also help them to approach bank and micro finance institutes. We are conducting training on ‘Entrepreneurship Development’. • VA launched training program for college going girl students from Pabal village. Tata Motor CSR dept is paying for their fees and providing scholarship for training expenses. First batch with 12 girls started with course on graphic designing, digital fabrication and modern agriculture. • We will be testing Heliostat tracking system designed by BARC at Vigyan Ashram. Three heliostat will be installed and will reflect solar rays on tower at VA. We have taken necessary permission from Gram Panchayat to use grazing land around tower for testing.
Updates – Entrepreneurship Development • We have conducted 4 Days entrepreneurship training program at Pabal to provide business modeling, design methodology, financial assistance and technology incubation for 20 participants who worked on their business ideas and made business plan. VA had external experts from MCED, Rang. De, 111 Startsup guiding students in their task. These students will learn computer based ‘design’ tool & web publishing skills during next 2 months tenure.

Updates: Infrastructure • A technology demonstration center – Techno Park is established with the support of Department of Science & technology (DST). • Construction of New class room is in progress. This will be auditorium hall with 160 students seating capacity. We are expecting it to be completed by June 2017. • Plasma Cutting Machine – Installed at metal fabrication workshop in Vigyan ashram. • Advanced CAD software & computer lab– We have setup computer lab with all advanced design software. This lab is setup with the support of Solidworks, Fab foundation and SBI life insurance. • VA’s soil micro-biology laboratory got registered under ‘Soil Health Card Mission’ scheme of Government of India. Under this mission VA will provide soil analysis facility to 4000 farmers/year. • Asha Seattle has donated Rs. 20, 000 towards student hostel. That combined with 5, 000 donated by late Mrs. Kalbag will cover the costs for the first floor. Architectural drawing has been approved. Quotations received and work will start after Diwali.
Updates: Workshops and Exhibitions • VA co-hosted Third International annual conference of Fab Asia Network (FAN 3). We displayed use of fab-lab for various rural technology development projects. • It was attended by representatives from asian countries viz. Japan, Philipines, Bhutan, Taiwan, Nepal, Bangaldesh, Singapore, Vietnam & India. Conference was held in Mumbai and Kochi and delegates visited Vigyan Ashram on 14 th Jan. • Yutaka and Tomaki from Fab Lab, Japan visited VA after FAN 3 on 19 th and 20 th Jan to discuss waste recycling and prosthetic project. We are working on for technical collaboration with them. • Workshop ‘Learning Science through Innovation’ was conducted at IISER, Pune for 40 student and 10 teachers. Fish Drying Machine project by Chikhalgaon school was selected at state level inspire award competition. • Workshop on using smart phone applications and websites to generate secondary data for school project was conducted at NCSC event organized at Baramati. Total 96 teachers from various schools across India attended this workshop.
Updates: Workshops and Exhibitions • ‘Designing, Fabrication & Installation of Wind Mill’ under guidance of Mr. Jorge Ayarza from Auroville (Pondicherry) and Co-Founder of Minvayu (www. minvayu. org). Total 22 individual participated in this 15 days training workshop. • Hydroponic Fodder automation system is installed at Sinnar Nashik for marginal farmers with the support of Yuva Mitra and ILFS. • Poultry farming technique workshop was conducted at Paoolwatt (Pasli, Tal-Velha) campus. • Vigyan Ashram has organized open house exhibition of all its work on 30 th July 2016 at Pabal. It was visited by around 2000 visitors and including schools students around Pabal. • TEDx Pune - A Fab magical Dome demonstrating usage of various sensor technologies. • Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) exhibition at New Delhi and 2 nd IISF program on 11 th December 2016. • Science Exhibition – Giant Metro Radio Station, Khodad (Pune) 28 th February. • Unnat Bharat Abhiyan (UBA) technology exhibition & 2 nd IISF program at New Delhi • VA participated in 3 rd Festival of Innovation-2017 (FOIN) at Rashtrapati Bhavan, New Delhiorganized by national Innovation Foundation & office of President of India with aim of exhibiting & promoting innovative technologies developed by educational institutes and grassroot innovators. We have exhibited prototype of ‘Dome dryer’ in the exhibition.
Updates: Workshops and Exhibitions • Conducted ‘Design thinking’ workshop in 4 villages. Shortlisted project ideas for the Fab. Ed workshop at IIT, Powai. • IBT team conducted a health camp in Mangnar village in Abujamad forest, Examined blood group of aprpox. 400 people in two days. • IBT team conducted workshop on photo lamination and POP article making for 20 children with special need (hearing and speech impaired) in ‘Saksham School’. • Students made Vegetable grading machine for their INSPIRE competition. • 3 workshops for school teachers from different parts of the Country. Theme of the workshop was on ‘Using various websites and mobile apps for generating secondary data for school projects’. Hands on workshop was attended by over 96 + teachers. • Vishwas conducted 1 days training workshop on ‘Designing & fabrication of simple solar dryer’ at Narayangaon. • One day workshop on ‘Self-Employment opportunities’ was conducted and attended by 51 students from 7 colleges from Shirur & Rajgurunager area. • We have conducted following summer Fab-camps on ‘digital fabrication & basics of robotics’ in Pune for 14 students and in Pabal for 8 students.
Updates: Workshops and Exhibitions • Under STEM project support to school students, VA conducted 2 Days workshop on ‘Learning science through innovation’ at Muktangan exploratory, Pune. Total 24 students participated in the workshop. They have identified the problem & designed solution through ‘design thinking’ approach. They will be working with VA mentors at DIY lab for next 2 months to complete their project. • Pawan conducted 1 day awareness workshop on ‘ Entrepreneurship & Start. Up Mission’ for 250 students from Arts, Commerce , Science faculty at CT Bora college Pune on 10 th December. • Brainstorming meeting on ‘Skill-On-Wheels’ project conducted at JP Naik centre , Pune. Objective of the meeting was to discuss new cost effective & larger impact model of ‘skill training’ for rural livelihood. • Yogesh and Rajshekhar attended ‘Tribal Education’ conference organized by ‘Bachapan Banao’ at Dantewada. Yogesh also conducted half a day hands on workshop for schools teachers on ‘Integrating work with school curriculum’. • One day orientation cum workshop on starting Atal Tinkering Lab in school was organized for teachers and management members of Dr. Kalamadi High school, Pune
Updates: Workshops and Exhibitions • Supriya & Komal conducted one day introductory workshop on ‘basics of electronics’ in 2 School of Patan in Satara district. Total 60 students attended this basics introductory course. • DBRT students & staff participated in ‘Jivansarita exhibition’ organized by Art of living foundation. VA put information exhibit of various skill training courses of VA. • VA participated in 5 th Bharatiya Vigyan Sammelan and Expo (BVS) and displayed various technologies and courses at VA. Partnered with BVS for idea completion ‘Our problem. . . my solution’. VA has offered mentoring and prototyping support to 2 best ideas in our Fab Lab. • Suhas visited New Delhi on 23 rd and 24 th July to attend meeting of ‘Fab lab India Network’. This meeting was organized in presence of Dr. Neil Greshenfeld.
Updates: Training and conferences • FAB 12 International Conference on Digital Fabrication at Shenzhen (China) Advanced: 5 members got training on digital fabrication and prototyping techniques • 2 Days workshop of “Entrepreneurship & crowd-funding” organized by Rang. De at Banglore on Enterprise management, microfinance , business planning , crowd funding. (1 staff member) • Maters training in ‘Micro irrigation techniques’, 4 days training @ Krushi Vigyan Kendra for 1 staff member • Conference by Indian Science & Technology Entrepreneurship park and Business Incubators Association (ISBA). 2 members learnt about ‘Powering start-up enablers’ by establishing startup incubation support structure in India. • Entrepreneurship Development Program on Micro Solar Dome at NBRIT , Kolkata (1 member) • Ranajeet attended course on ‘Genomics and Molecular Biotechnology’ at Botany Dept. , Savitribai Phule Pune University. • Pawan attended ‘train-the-training’ program under BOSCH-BRIDGE in Bangalore.
Updates: Training and conferences • Yogesh and Ranajeet participated in 7 th STARs forum conference at Chinmayaswami Seva Trust, Sidhbari, Dharamshala (Himachal Pradesh). Yogesh is Chairperson of the STARs forum. Conference was attended by 80 delegates and theme was ‘Entrepreneurship & Self-employment opportunities for economically backward'. • Yogesh visited Banasthali Vidyapeeth and Barefoot College in Rajasthan on as a part of DST Expert committee to evaluate the proposal. • Vigyan ashram fab lab team & DBRT team also participated in Makers-Mela at Mumbai. • Under STEM program for secondary school students. Sarika conducted 3 days training workshop for 37 students. The workshop was based on ‘Basics of digital fabrication & electronic’. • Vigyan ashram has collaborated with Pratham Education foundation to conduct DIY camps for under-privileged students from Pune city. • Yogesh attended Regional Workshop organised by MHRD to share Innovations and Best Practices in Pune.

Updates – Publications and speeches • Yogesh presented concept note on establishing ‘Rural Technology Business Accelerator’ at Pabal in Executive committee meeting of Dept. of Science &Technology at Lucknow. • Yogesh gave a talk on ‘Rural Development through Education system’ for fellows of Teach for India on 24 th June. • Yogesh had participated in symposium on ‘Fabricating Society’ as a speaker and presented aspirational scenario for Indian Villages in next 50 years. • Yogesh Kulkarni gave talk on 'Changing context of Leadership' at a National conference at GG International School • Yogesh participated in National policy roundtable on Social entrepreneurship policy organised by Pune International center • Yogesh was panelist in a workshop on sustainable development goals and Fab lab objectives.
Updates – Awards and Recognitions • ‘Vasundhara Krutdnyata Purskara – 2016 ‘award given by omkar trust • (Pune) on 30 th June for skill training & technology transfer program for rural society. • IBN-Lokmat interviewed Dr. Yogesh Kulkarni in their program Desh. Ed activities in more rural schools. • Mrs Nalini Yadav accepted 'Guruvarya Purskar - Dr. Abdul Kalam award for visionary in science and Innovation in Pedagogy ' on behalf of VA.
Updates – Misc • VA celebrated Woman’s day on 8 th March. Now we have 32 residential and 13 nonresidential girls studying at ashram. Total strength of girl’s students in ashram is 45 against 47 nos of DBRT boys! Hope we will see more women entrepreneurs and innovators in coming years. • Mr. Yamada from Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) Bhutan Office visited VA on 22 nd March. They are planning to setup a Fab Lab in Bhutan. He wrote an article on his visit https: //goo. gl/l. QS 2 NY • In an unfortunate incident our DBRT student Ms Guddi committed suicide in hostel due to personal reason. • We have two French intern Ms Agatha Bras and Eva Maillard joined VA for 6 weeks volunteering. They will be conducting classes for computer (30 th April – 9 th June). • Lucas and Marie from organization MAKERTOUR (http: //www. makertour. fr/en/home/) are documenting Maker Spaces around the world. They visited Vigyan ashram fablab and interviewed many students and users of the lab. Updates – Misc • Ms. Agathe and Eva, both intern from France are conducting session with Girl students in Bosch Bridge Training program. Topics covered are communication skills, writing blog and writing resume. • First batch of Bosch BRIDGE Training completed their training on 31 st July 2017. There were 17 girls from Pabal College for training. • Vigyan ashram in collaboration with NBIRT, Kolkata organized 3 days’ workshop on Micro solar dome installation from 1 st June to 3 rd June 2017. Twenty members from DST supported core organization from 6 states participated in the training. • VA is giving to projects to Volunteers and interns. 15 interns from Maharashtra, Punjab, Calcutta • On World Youth Skills Day (15 July 2017), Vigyan Ashram conducted Skill Development workshop for 70 construction workers along with DBRT-Engineering students. • Our experiments in Saswad garbage depot helped Saswad corporation to get ‘Harit Brand’ from Govt of Maharashtra for its compost. Updates – Misc • Dr. Arun Dixit and Mr. Ranajeet visited BARC on 23 rd July to study various technologies made by BARC and available for dissemination especially technologies in waste management through composting & bio-gas production. • Yogesh visited IIT to discuss proposal of Maker Lab program for schools. • Yogesh represented Vigyan Ashram at Fab 13 conference at Santiago, Chile. Following were highlights of the conference. • Installation of Bio-toilets – Two units of 1000 lit capacity bio-toilet tanks are installed at campus. They are capable of digesting human waste in 48 hrs holding time. It is complete odourless process. • 5 -member team from Manav chetana Vikas Kendra, Indore visited VA on 28 th and 29 th to study educational philosophy of ashram. • Pabal villager Manmode and Ingale Family in Pabal village has donated Rs. 51, 000/- on the occasion of wedding of their son & daughter. The amount will be used for ongoing classroom construction at Vigyan Ashram.
