Vietnam Pig Value Chain Update Lucy Lapar Value Chain Development Team Planning Meeting Kampala, 22 -24 July 2013
Vietnam Pig Value Chain Progress so far • By end 2013, significant progress will have been made in site selection, situational analysis, VC assessments for food safety and animal health, impact pathways development, and stakeholder engagement. • Key achievements you would like to highlight so far in 2012 and 2013 – VCAs completed for food safety and animal health – VCAs on feed and breed implemented in 1 site (with CIAT project) – Best bets for food safety and animal health identified for ex ante assessment (end of 2013) – Situational analysis completed (September) – Partners trained on SDs for VC performance assessment – Conceptual Framework for VC performance assessment developed (end 2013) – Platform for stakeholder engagement designed (end of 2013) – CN on breed developed and submitted to target donor (IFAD) (end 2013)
Vietnam Pig Value Chain Who will get the work done in 2014? • Value chain team members – – – Lucy Lapar, economics and policy Fred Unger, vet epidemiology Karl Rich, value chain model Delia Grace, food safety Adrian Bolliger (CIAT), feeds and forages • Strategic partners we are working with or targeting – – – – – Hanoi University of Agriculture Hanoi School of Public Health MARD/DARD/ (WB LIFSAP project) CIAT (IFAD project) CIRAD (REVALTER project) NIAS (GEF-Asia project) HPI Vietnam – target SNV Vietnam – target CECAD - target
Vietnam Pig Value Chain Bilateral projects activities in 2014 (ILRI-led or ILRI as an implementing partner • Pig Risk Project /ACIAR/Delia Grace/Food Safety and Zoonosis (reducing risk and improving food safety in smallholder pig value chains) • REVALTER Project/EU/Isabelle Baltenweck/IS-LGI (multiscale assessment of livestock development pathways in Vietnam) • GEF-Asia Project/UNEP/Okeyo Mwai/Biosciences (decision support tools for conservation through utilization of An. GR) • CSF vaccine
Vietnam Pig Value Chain Main activities expected in 2014 • Activity 1 : Review of interventions/update of Pig Interventions report (pig competitiveness) • Activity 2 : Ex-ante assessment of identified best bets for food safety and animal health • Activity 3 : Trials of prioritized best bets (as above) from ex ante assessment • Activity 4 : VC performance assessment (test case) • Activity 5 : Initiate implementation of stakeholder platform
Vietnam Pig Value Chain Main challenges we are facing • Challenge: mobilizing resources to complement ongoing activities and fill gap in other components (feed, breed, innovation system, policy) – CN on breed being developed with VN partners (CECAD and possibly TNU/WASI for submission to IFAD) • Challenge: critical gap in expertise (animal nutrition/feeds, breed) – explore grants for VN graduate fellowships (e. g. , USDA on pig sector support fellowships in 2014, possibly on pig nutrition)
