Victorian Art
Public art galleries are a Victorian invention. Between 1845 and 1897 they were opening all over Britain in cities like Sheffield, Manchester, Liverpool and Birmingham and very many more. The richness and complexity of Victorian life was reflected in its art. We look at pictures and sculpture produced then to make discoveries about the way the people lived.
In this unit of work the focus of will be ‘Light and Shade’. We will be working towards producing our very own Victorian Art.

Leonardo da Vinci, 1452 -1519 What made Leonardo's paintings so revolutionary was his use of light and shadow, rather than lines, to define threedimensional objects. He once wrote that light and shade should blend 'without lines or borders in the manner of smoke', giving rise to the term sfumato, meaning 'seen as if through smoke'. The soft shadows around corners of the eyes and mouths make Leonardo's faces seem more alive because they leave a little to our imagination.
A light projected onto an object or figure creates lights, darks, and cast shadows. Your source of light may be the sun, the moon, a light through a window or an artificial light.
