Victor Gabriel Gilbert nasceu em Paris, França, em 13 de fevereiro de 1847. Biography: Victor Gabriel Gilbert was born in Paris, France, on February 13, 1847. Unable to attend the “École des Beaux-Arts” by the lack of resources, when he was thirteen he worked as an apprentice to Eugène Adam, a craftsman of decorative themes. At night, he attended lessons at the “École de la Ville de Paris”, with Pierre Levasseur, which was his only form of official artistic training. In 1873, Gilbert debuted at the “Salon”, in Paris. Gilbert became the painter of “Les Halles”, in Paris, an area which was then a center of street sellers and markets. Gilbert’s ability to capture different activitiesof work and social types is another aspect of his style. One of his works, “Un Coin de la Halle aux Poisson, le Matin”, exhibited at the “Salon” of 1880, earned him his first medal. In 1897 he was named “Chevalier de la Légion d’Honneur”. He became a member of the “Societé des Artistes Français” in 1914, and received the Award “Léon Bonnat”in 1926. Gilbert continued to exhibit regularly at the “Salon” until 1933.
