Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz é um artista plástico, fotógrafo e desenhista brasileiro, conhecido como Vik Muniz, nascido em São Paulo, em 20 de dezembro de 1961. Vik Muniz cursou Publicidade e Propaganda na “Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado” – Faap, em São Paulo. Em 1983, passou a viver em Nova York, onde reside e trabalha. Desde a sua mudança para Nova York e o estabelecimento de um estúdio em Brooklyn, Vik Muniz desenvolveu uma obra que tem como objetivo reanimar o aturdimento visual e crítico do espectador, dirigindo a sua atenção para os mecanismos técnicos e conceituais que estão por detrás da produção, construção e reprodução de imagens.

A obra de Vik Muniz questiona e tensiona os limites da representação. Apropriando-se de matérias-primas como geleia, chocolate, pasta de amendoim, xarope, vinho, açúcar, materiais recicláveis, fios de cabelo, arame, diamante, gel, pigmentos, comidas, entre outros, o artista meticulosamente compõe imagens icônicas e lhes repropõe significados. Seu trabalho une os problemas às soluções, as questões humanas às questões climáticas e, acima de tudo, consegue estabelecer a relação entre a Arte, a responsabilidade social e a sustentabilidade. A técnica criada por Vik Muniz consiste na utilização desse material variado e inusitados na formação de imagens, que depois são fotografadas e ampliadas. Vik Muniz fez trabalhos insólitos, como a cópia da Mona Lisa (Leonardo da Vinci), usando manteiga de amendoim e geleia como matéria prima. Com calda de chocolate, pintou o retrato de Sigmund Freud. Muniz também fez releituras de grandes mestres da pintura: Claude Monet, Albert Dürer, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, entre outros. Atualmente, o objeto final de sua produção mais conhecido é a fotografia, mas sua obra já transitou pelo tridimensional, pelo desenho e até pela escultura. Self-Portrait Vik Muniz participou de inúmeras bienais e exposições individuais no Brasil e no exterior. Suas obras integram acervos como os do “Centre Georges Pompidou”, Paris, “Guggenheim Museum”, Nova York, “Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía”, Madri e “Inhotim – Instituto de Arte Contemporânea”, Brumadinho, Brasil.

Uma de suas exposições mais comentadas foi a denominada “Vik Muniz: Reflex”, no “University of South Florida Contemporary Art Museum”, também exposta no “Seattle Art Museum Contemporary” e no “Art Museum” em Nova York. Um livro chamado “Reflex - A Vik Muniz Primer”, foi lançado em 2005, contendo uma coleção de fotos de seus trabalhos expostos. Vik Muniz é o autor de um projeto artístico, mostrado em 2010, no documentário “Lixo Extraordinário”, realizado durante três anos com catadores de lixo do lixão de Jardim Gramacho, de Duque de Caxias, cidade localizada na área metropolitana do Rio de Janeiro. A filmagem recebeu um prêmio no “Festival de Berlim” na categoria Anistia Internacional e no “Festival de Sundance”. Self-Portrait

Biography: Vicente José de Oliveira Muniz is a Brazilian plastic artist, photographer and designer, known as Vik Muniz, who was born in São Paulo, Brazil, on December 20, 1961. Vik Muniz graduated in Advertizing and Marqueting at “Fundação Armando Álvares Penteado”, Faap, São Paulo. In 1983 he moved to New York, where he lives and work. Since his move to New York, and the establishment of a studio in Brooklin, Vik Muniz developed a work that aims revive the stunning visual and critical of the viewer, directing his attention to the technical and conceptual mechanisms that underlie the production, construction and the reprodution of images. Vik Muniz's work questions and strains the limits of representation. He gets hold of raw materials as jelly, chocolate, peanut butter, syrup, wine, sugar, recycables, hair, wire, diamond, gel, pigments, foods, among others, and meticously composes them into iconic images and proposes new meanings to them. His work unites the problems to solutions, human questions to climate quuestions and, above all, he obtains a relation between the Art, the social responsability and the sustentability. The tecnique created by Vic Muniz, is the use of these various and unusual materials and objects in the images settings, that afterwards are photographed and enlarged. Vik Muniz has done unusual works, as the copy of Mona Lisa (Leonardo da Vinci), using peanut butter and jelly as raw material. With chocolate syrup, he painted the portrait of Sigmund Freud. Muniz also did reinterpretations of great masters of painting: Claude Monet, Albert Dürer, Gerhard Richter, Andy Warhol, among others. Currently, the best known final object of his prodution is the photograph, but his work has gone through the tridimensional, design and even sculpture. He participated in numerous biennials and solo exhibitions in Brazil and abroad. His works are part of the collections such as the “Centre Georges Pompidou”, in Paris, “Guggenheim Museum”, Nova York, “Museo Nacional Centro de Arte Reina Sofía”, Madrid e “Inhotim – Instituto de Arte Contemporânea”, Brumadinho, Brazil. One of his most talked about exhibitions was the one named “Vik Muniz Reflex”, at the “University of South Florida - Contemporary Art Museum”, also exposed at the “Seattle Art Museum Contemporary” and at the “Art Museum” in New York. A book named “Reflex - A Vik Muniz Primer”, was released in 2005, containing a collection of photos of his work already exhibited. Symphony in White, Nº 1 The White Girl, after James Whistler, 2013 Vik Muniz is the author of an artistic project, shown in 2010, the documentary “Lixo Extraordinário”, performed by three years with the garbage pickers of the Jardim Gramacho Garbage Field, in Duque de Caxias, a town located at the metropolitan area of Rio de Janeiro. The film received an award at the “Berlim Festival”, in the category of Amnesty International, and at the “Festival de Sundance”.
