Classroom Practices • Be honest about what you can & can’t change • Reframe classroom goals as mission objectives • Encourage sense of connection/community – Vets are establishing a new identity, sense of self
Classroom Practices • If politics become part of the conversation: – is it relevant? – If so, how do I broach a sensitive topic? • Create the space for an honest and respectful conversation
Classroom Practices • Respect their privacy. – Some may still feel unsure about their role in conflict – Don’t put them “on the spot” to share stories – Don’t ask if they’ve shot someone
Classroom Practices • Describe in advance audio or other media, so students can opt to leave the classroom if it might trigger PTSD symptoms • Provide ability for students to take short breaks (5 -10 minutes) in either a class session or testing environment when stressful situations arise
Classroom Practices • Respect their training and experience. – Be flexible with assigned seating • If the student begins experiencing a trigger – Re-establish student’s sense of control – Listen carefully – Allow student to step away from classroom
