Background information on perception of time in different cultures People view the concept of time in different ways. Some cultures seem to have plenty of time and count by hours or half days. Others run their lives by minutes. Basically there are said to be three types of time orientation: 1. Present orientated, with little attention to what has happened in past and what the future will bring. (Time is considered as very rare and expensive – that is why it has to be well organized. ) 2. Past orientated, with a high sense of their traditions, traditionalism and family. (Being late for an appointment is not as important as your social relations. ) 3. Future orientated cultures like making strategies and focus on their future success. Background information on perception of time in different cultures In business time management often appears to be a challenge, especially in the hospitality and catering sector, where hundreds of people from different nations meet and communicate everyday. Make yourself familiar with the different concepts of time in the countries your guest come from: some cultures tolerate or even expect delays in appointments. But for instance in Germany, Finland, USA and China time has a high value and has to be precisely organized to keep business running. Think about where time could matter: ordering taxis, waiting for the meal in a restaurant etc. The European Commission support for the production of this presentation does not constitute endorsement of the contents which reflects the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein
Instructions to reflect on your own view on time Use the following questions to look at how you think about and value time. You can consider your time management, how you deal with appointments, what you expect from others or even asking yourself how often you look at your watch throughout the day. This activity is intended to motivate your self-awareness and reflection about your own time orientation. Can you find examples in your daily work with colleagues or guests where a different view on time caused trouble in the past? Questions about time 1. How do you feel when someone keeps you waiting for long time? 2. Do you find yourself rushing the conversation when you know you have very little time to spend with someone? 3. What proverbs do you know that express a cultural orientation toward time in your culture? (E. g. , “Time is money”—time is something to be managed and spent. ) The European Commission support for the production of this presentation does not constitute endorsement of the contents which reflects the views only of the authors, and the Commission cannot be held responsible for any use which may be made of the information contained therein
