Summary • The vertical dimension of occlusion refers to the length of face as determined by the amount of separation of the jaws. • Many techniques have been used to determine the vertical dimension which range from using pre extraction records to the use of swallowing functionally acquired jaw positions by phonetics and even Cephalometrics. • What so ever there is no universally accepted or completely accurate method to determine the vertical dimension in edentulous patients.

Conclusion • Whatever the method in use, it is the end result that matters.
