History $200 While attending the Association of Commerce meeting, Paul Harris heard a discussion concerning the need for public restrooms - “comfort stations” was the term used then. In those days, the only places women could find toilet facilities were inside department stores; men had to use the restrooms inside the many taverns. There was an implicit obligation to spend money with the merchant in exchange for using his facilities.

The club endorsed the idea, but it soon ran into formidable opposition. The Chicago Association of Brewers argued that its 6, 000 tavern-owning members already provided sufficient men’s rooms; the Association of Department Stores supported the bar owners’ position and

History $500 Engineer Oscar Bjorge From his hospital bed, where he was recovering from an appendectomy, Bjorge sketched out a new wheel with six spokes (some say emblematic of the six Objects of Rotary at that time) and 24 teeth. Finally, he added a keyway, which locks a wheel to a hub, thus making it a “worker and not an idler. ” In 1928, Bjorge’s exact specifications were written into the Manual of Procedure, and approved by the 1929 Dallas convention.
