A Scroll Sealed with 7 Seals
The Seals A seal, in biblical times as today, is used to guarantee security or indicate ownership. Ancient seals were often made of wax, embedded with the personalized imprint of their guarantor. (Bible Study Tools) An unbroken seal would prove the document had not be read by anyone. Having 7 seals would mean that God was serious about sealing up this particular scroll.
The Scroll Sealed with 7 Seals Revelation 5: 1 And I saw lying on the open hand of Him Who was seated on the throne a scroll (book) written within and on the back, closed and sealed with seven seals; AMPC We know that the Scroll is in the open hand of God the Father.
The Scroll Lying in the Open Hand
What is the Scroll? Many ideas have been offered: 1) it is the Old Testament. 2) it is the whole Bible. 3) it is the Apocalypse. 4) it is part of the Apocalypse. 5) it is the scroll in Daniel 12 which is sealed up until the time of the End. 6) it is the book of God's purposes and providence. 7) it is the book containing the sentence of judgment on the foes of the faith. 8) it is the title-deed of man's inheritance.
Ezekiel’s Scroll Could it be a scroll like the one Ezekiel was given, words of Judgment and Woe. And when I looked, behold, a hand was stretched out to me, and behold, a scroll of a book was in it. And he spread it before me. And it had writing on the front and on the back, and there written on it words of lamentation and mourning and woe. (Ezekiel 2: 9– 10 ESV)
What is the Scroll? We know this from Scripture: 1) Just the breaking of the seals alone brings woes to the planet. The woes that occur are not necessarily what is written in the Scroll. 2) With the breaking of the Seventh Seal the Seven Trumpet Judgments of God begin, and at the Seventh Trumpet we see the “kingdom of the world becoming the Kingdom of our Lord and of His Christ, and He will reign forever and ever. ” (Rev 11: 15 b)
Seals Are Still Unbroken I believe that, even now, this scroll has not been opened, it is still sealed. Remember: John saw an event that took place in the future. I believe this because when these seals are broken end time judgments begin. I believe that the Scroll which no-one could open except Christ could be the Book of Life with the names of all the redeemed from the beginning of time to then.
Mighty Angel Proclaiming “Who is Worthy. . . ” Revelation 5: 2 -3 And I saw a strong angel announcing in a loud voice, Who is worthy to open the scroll? And [who is entitled and deserves and is morally fit] to break its seals? And no one in heaven or on earth or under the earth [in the realm of the dead, Hades] was able to open the scroll or to take a [single] look at its contents. (AMPC)
Who Can Open the Seals? When that question was asked, the souls of all men, throughout all time, were considered by God, but sin was found in all. Then God considers the angelic realm, and their great strength, beauty and majesty, but none were found worthy, not even the Four Living Creatures who are constantly praising and worshipping God. For none had given their life for mankind.
John wept and wept because all were unworthy Revelation 5: 4 And I wept audibly and bitterly because no one was found fit to open the scroll or to inspect it. (AMPC) At that point in the vision John felt the deep sorrow of not only his own unworthiness but the added burden of a creation both angelic and human, who are unworthy.
The Lion of the Tribe of Judah is worthy Revelation 5: 5 Then one of the elders [of the heavenly Sanhedrin] said to me, Stop weeping! See, the Lion of the tribe of Judah, the Root (Source) of David, has won (has overcome and conquered)! He can open the scroll and break its seven seals! (AMPC) Isaiah 11: 1 -10 Hebrews 7: 14 -28
Slain Lamb with 7 horns and 7 eyes
Slain Lamb with 7 horns and 7 eyes Revelation 5: 6 And there between the throne and the four living creatures (beings) and among the elders [of the heavenly Sanhedrin] I saw a Lamb standing, as though it had been slain, with seven horns and with seven eyes, which are the seven Spirits of God [the sevenfold Holy Spirit] Who have been sent [on duty far and wide] into all the earth. (AMPC)
Slain Lamb Standing The wound-marks are there, but it is not dead; it is standing, for it represents Him who though He died is alive for evermore; but the signs of suffering and death are visible, for it is not the Lamb, but the suffering Lamb, which is exalted; it is not the Christ, but the Christ crucified, which is the power of God; the Christ lifted up from the earth draws all men unto Him (John 12: 32; 1 Corinthians 1: 23 -24) Elliot’s commentary
The Lion and the Lamb We are told that the Lion of the tribe of Judah has triumphed, and of course we expect to see a Lion, but as John looks he sees a Lamb looking as if it had been slain. [Power manifesting in seeming weakness. Elliot] Isaiah 53: 7 John 1: 29
The Lamb takes the Scroll Revelation 5: 7 He then went and took the scroll from the right hand of Him Who sat on the throne. (AMPC)
The 4 Living Creatures & 24 Elders and the bowls of incense Revelation 5: 8 And when He had taken the scroll, the four living creatures and the twenty-four elders [of the heavenly Sanhedrin] prostrated themselves before the Lamb. Each was holding a harp (lute or guitar), and they had golden bowls full of incense (fragrant spices and gums for burning), which are the prayers of God’s people (the saints). (AMPC)
They Sang a New Song Revelation 5: 9 -10 And [now] they sing a new song, saying, You are worthy to take the scroll and to break the seals that are on it, for You were slain (sacrificed), and with Your blood You purchased men unto God from every tribe and language and people and nation. And You have made them a kingdom (royal race) and priests to our God, and they shall reign [as kings] over the earth! (AMPC)
The Great Assembly of Angels Revelation 5: 11 Then I looked, and I heard the voices of many angels on every side of the throne and of the living creatures and the elders [of the heavenly Sanhedrin], and they numbered ten thousand times ten thousands of thousands, (AMPC)
The Angels Proclaim Revelation 5: 12 Saying in a loud voice, Deserving is the Lamb, Who was sacrificed, to receive all the power and riches and wisdom and might and honor and majesty (glory, splendor) and blessing! (AMPC)
All Creation Proclaim Revelation 5: 13 And I heard every created thing in heaven and on earth and under the earth [in Hades, the place of departed spirits] and on the sea and all that is in it, crying out together, To Him Who is seated on the throne and to the Lamb be ascribed the blessing and the honor and the majesty (glory, splendor) and the power (might and dominion) forever and ever (through the eternities of the eternities)! (AMPC)
The 4 Living Creatures and Elders Worship Revelation 5: 14 Then the four living creatures (beings) said, Amen (so be it)! And the elders [of the heavenly Sanhedrin] prostrated themselves and worshiped Him Who lives forever and ever. (AMPC)
