What is a Verbal? ~A verbal is a verb used as a noun adjective, or adverb. ~ There are three different types of verbals: gerunds, participles, and infinitives. Example: Babies can only learn to talk by talking. ~In the sentence above “talking” is used as a noun, so it is a gerund verbal.
Gerunds: ~ These type of verbals function as nouns. Examples: ~Singing might be fun for you. ~My dog loves to sleep ~ He went to the principals office for talking
Participles: ~ These type of verbals function as adjectives. Examples: ~Smiling, the team won the trophy. ~The melting marshmallow fell of my stick and into the fire. ~Frowning, the student failed his math test.
Infinitives: ~ These type of verbals function as nouns, adjectives, or adverbs. Examples: ~They went outside to walk. ~She was in the contest to win. ~We got in the car to go to practice.
