Verb + Preposition Combinations �Must be learned as a single phrase �Preposition must be there otherwise the meaning of the verb changes �A few examples: ◦ sich vorbereiten auf = to prepare for ◦ teilnehmen an = to participate in ◦ studieren an = to study at (a university)
Verb + Preposition Combinations �How do we know which case to use after the preposition? �Dative Prepositions = DATIVE (duh!) �Accusative Prepositions = ACCUSATIVE (duh!) �But what about two-way prepositions? ◦ We’re not talking about “location or motion” so we can’t go by that rule ◦ Simple answer = you have to memorize them
�But Verb + Preposition Combinations let’s look a bit closer…shall we? �With very few exceptions, only 3 of the two-way prepositions are used in most of these combinations: ◦ an ◦ auf ◦ über �In most of these combinations, these 3 prepositions are followed by the accusative case �There are some that go with dative ◦ Mostly afer an ◦ Must be memorized
