THE BASE VERB Sometimes a verb changes its form. Let’s look at the following sentences. The verb is underlined in each one. 1. Jhon should study. 2. Jhon studied. 3. Jhon is studying. 4. Jhon studies. A verb has its base form that is called base verb or infinitive (with or without ‘to’ and base verb). So, the base form of ‘studies’, ‘studied’, and ‘studying’ is ‘study’.

ACTION AND LINKING VERBS The verbs we have looked at so far, all indicate actions. In fact, they are called action verb. However, there are other verbs which don’t indicate actions. These are most commonly called linking verbs. One example of such a verb is the word seem, in the sentence, You seem tired, They’ve seemed busy lately. Linking verbs expresses a relationship between the noun or pronoun that comes before the linking verb and whatever follows it.

COPULA The most common linking verb is the verb be, often called the copula. Here are the examples: q I am happy. q You are happy. q He is happy. q I was happy. q You were happy.
