What does an ideal Vehicle Engineering student look like? You ideally need to be interested in how mechanical things work. You should have an inquisitive mind and be prepared to dismantle and re-assemble items. A passion for cars is helpful but not essential. More important is the desire to solve problems and the love of practical work. What does the course entail? You will cover 3 main modules; a theory based module covering the main functions of a vehicle, a practical module where you will disassemble and reassemble the major components of a modern vehicle including the engine, suspension and electronic components and a final practical servicing module where you complete a full vehicle service schedule. In addition you will have the opportunity to learn basic practical engineering principles including welding and centre lathe work. For more information have a look at the options booklet. How will students be assessed? The first module is assessed with a graded Pass, Merit or Distinction multiple choice online test. The second module is graded Pass/Fail from teacher assessments of your practical work in lesson times. The final module is a formal assessment of a vehicle service at the end of the course and is graded Pass, Merit or Distinction. Where can this lead to? The course directly links to other Level 2 or 3 qualifications in most areas of the automotive and engineering industry and can create career opportunities in automotive retail, maintenance, engineering and development. It is an ideal route to progress onto employment, apprenticeships and further job related training.
