THE POPEYE PIGS • Made by a group of Japanese scientists • These are pigs that have had spinach Genes imbedded into their DNA • These pigs are literally part animal part vegetable • This means that their body fats are stored as Unsaturated plant fats • This is healthier for humans upon consumption of the pig (yum) Why is it always me?
HOW THIS HAPPENS Spinach DNA Spliced into a bacterial vector. This bacterium is then inserted into the host pig. The hosts DNA is changed by the newly inserted DNA. This results in the pigs having the genes for the creation of unsaturated (rather than saturated) fats
THE ETHICS • Really? WE TURNED A PIG INTO A PART VEGETABLE!!! WHERE ARE THE ETHICS? • On a serious note, though no health problems have been reported with the pigs, We are once again ‘playing god’ which means every major religion is against it. • Also, won’t someone please think of the piggy? How would you like to be a vegetable (the unsaturated fat is less of an insulator for pig body heat, and it provides less ‘squidge’ when it hits something, meaning its more likely to hurt itself • Physics behind this ↓ (Impulse = change in momentum = Mass x Velocity / Time , less ‘squidge’ means less time, and therefore higher impulse (aka force felt). )
