VCE RESULTS • When a student completes the VCE their results are produced by the VCAA (Victorian Curriculum and Assessment Authority). • Each Unit 3/4 sequence completed will be reported on the student’s Statement of Results with the following: 1. Unit result (S = Satisfactory pass, N = Not satisfactorily passed) 2. Three graded assessments (letter grades, e. g. B+) 3. One study score (maximum 50)

WHAT IS A GRADED ASSESSMENT? • At Unit 3 and 4 level, there are three Graded Assessments for each subject, consisting of Schoolassessed Coursework (SACs), School-assessed Tasks (SATs) and examinations. • The Graded Assessments are different for each subject and contribute towards the study score in different ways. • You must complete at least two Graded Assessments, and have satisfactorily completed both unit 3 and 4, to be awarded a study score.

WHAT IS A STUDY SCORE? • A study score shows how well a student has performed in a subject at Unit 3 and 4 level, compared to everybody else in Victoria who completed that subject. • Study scores calculated by the VCAA will be used by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) to calculate the ATAR (Australian Tertiary Admission Rank).

WHAT IS A STUDY SCORE? • The maximum study score is 50. • Each year, and for every subject, the mean (average) study score is set at 30. • A score of between 23 and 37 shows that you are in the middle range of students • A score of more than 38 indicates that you are in the top 15%.

WHAT IS AN ATAR? • ATAR is Australian Tertiary Entrance Rank • ATAR, is a percentile awarded to students upon completion of Year 12 in all Australian states except Queensland. • Your ATAR is calculated by the Victorian Tertiary Admissions Centre (VTAC) from your study scores. • The number functions as a rank of all students in the State • The maximum rank attainable is 99. 95 • The minimum is <30. 00

HOW IS AN ATAR CALCULATED? • Each of your study scores is scaled (adjusted

HOW IS AN ATAR CALCULATED? • Each of your study scores is scaled (adjusted up or down depending on the strength of competition amongst the cohort of students studying the subject that year) • The scores are added together to form a number called an "aggregate". • The aggregate consists of: 1. Scaled score in an English subject 2. The next three highest scaled scores 3. 10% of any 5 th scaled score 4. 10% of any 6 th scaled score

HOW IS AN ATAR CALCULATED? • Students are ranked in order of aggregates. •

HOW IS AN ATAR CALCULATED? • Students are ranked in order of aggregates. • The student with the lowest aggregate on one end, and the student with the highest aggregate on the other end. • The ATAR score is a percentile, and represents how many students got a lower aggregate than you.

HOW IS AN ATAR CALCULATED? • If your ATAR score is 80, that means

HOW IS AN ATAR CALCULATED? • If your ATAR score is 80, that means your aggregate was higher than 80% of students putting you in the top 20% of students • If your ATAR score is 60, that means your aggregate was higher than 60% of students putting you in the top 40% of students • 99. 95 is the highest ATAR available, and means that your aggregate was the highest in the state making your result better than 99. 95% of other students!

KEY POINTS TO REMEMBER • VCE is a competition between all students in the State • A lot of ‘hype’ surrounds VCE results • A lot of pressure is experienced by VCE students • Study Scores and ATARs are rankings not raw scores

WHAT SHOULD STUDENTS FOCUS ON? • Students must focus on ‘controllables’! ▫ ▫ ▫ DO YOUR BEST! Work hard consistently Complete home work Regular revision Regular contact with teachers Prioritise time – make good decision with your time … because you can not get it back! ▫ Be persistent • Students should not worry about scaling • Students should not get caught up in the ‘hype’ of media published results • Scores are relative to your goals
