Variations in Animal Groups
Grouping Animals LI –To group animals. SC –To group animals into the correct category. To discuss similarities and differences.
Grouping Animals There around 8. 7 million species of animal in the world today. Scientist believe that there are many animals yet to be discovered.
Classifying Animals Scientist decided to classify animals into different groups to make it easier to identify them.
Classifying Animals There are two main groups when classifying animals, vertebrates and invertebrates.
Vertebrates are animals with a backbone.
Invertebrates are animals without a backbone.
Grouping Animals can be separated into vertebrates and invertebrates but they can also be classified into more specific groups.
Grouping Animals These groups are: • Mammals • Amphibians • Birds • Fish • Arthropods / Insects • Reptiles
Why do we Classify Animals? We classify animals so that we have a clear and organised way of identifying and listing the many millions of animals in the world.
How do we Classify Animals? There are many ways to classify animals by: • Species • Size • Body characteristics • Graphic location
What is a Mammal? • A mammal is a vertebrate. • It has a back bone and a well-developed brain. • A mammal has fur or hair. • It is warm blooded.
Mammals We are mammals. lion Discuss the similarities and differences between them. zebra
What is a fish? • A fish is an animal that lives in water and breaths through gills. • It has aback bone (vertebrate). • Most fish have fins, are covered with scales, and are cold-blooded.
Fish live in water. They have fins instead of legs and gills instead of lungs. They lay their eggs in water. Clown Fish Discuss the similarities and differences between them. Neon Tetra
What is a Reptile? • A reptile is an animal that has dry, rough, scaly skin. • It has lungs for breathing. • A reptile is cold-blooded and has a backbone. • Most reptiles hatch from eggs. • It is a vertebrate.
Reptiles Note the similarities and differences between them. lizard Reptiles live in water and on land. They have scales and are cold blooded. This means that they cannot keep warm by themselves and need to be in a warm place. They lay their eggs on land. snake
What is an Arthropod / Insect? An insect is a small animal with six legs. Its body is divided into three main parts An insect has a hard outer covering called an exoskeleton. Most insects have wings and a pair of antennae. Arthropods are invertebrates.
Insects have 6 legs. Their bodies are made up of 3 parts. Some have wings. They lay eggs. butterfly Note the similarities and differences between them. ladybird
What is a Bird? • A bird is an animal that has feathers. It is warm blooded, hatches from an egg, and hasblooded, a back bone. hatches It has a beak, two • It is warm legs, and two wings. from an egg, and has a back bone. • It has a beak, two legs, and two wings.
Birds have a beak, wings, feathers and 2 legs. They lay eggs. penguins Discuss the similarities and differences between them. Mandarin Duck
What is an Amphibian? • An amphibian is an animal that usually lives part of its life in water and part of its life on land. • It is cold-blooded and has a back bone. • Most amphibians have smooth, moist skin and no scales.
Amphibians live on land in water. They lay their eggs in water. frog Discuss the similarities and differences between them. salamander
