THE MODERN DEBATE ABOUT E-CIGARETTES “Young people have taken a technology that was supposed to help grownups stop smoking and invented a new kind of bad habit, one that they have molded in their own image. The potential public-health benefit of the ecigarette is being eclipsed by the unsettling prospect of a generation of children who may really love to vape. ” Jia Tolentino, “The Promise of Vaping and the Rise of Juul, ” The New Yorker (May 14, 2018)
WHAT ARE SOME REASONS WHY YOUTH & TEENS USE? Peer pressure To be “cool” To feel better e. g. , relieve stress To do better improve performance Curiosity To feel good feelings of pleasure, “high”
VAPING, E-CIGARETTES & JUUL What is the difference between vaping, ecigarettes, and Juuls? • Vaping is an umbrella term describing the process of inhaling and exhaling the vapor produced by an electronic cigarette or similar device that heats a substance (such as nicotine without smoke or tar). • E-cigarettes are a type of vaping device. • Juul (pronounced “jewel”) is a brand of ecigarette produced by JUUL Labs, Inc. , and marketed as a smoking cessation pro
WHAT ARE ECIGARETTES? • Battery powered vaporizer used to inhale liquid nicotine • It heats the liquid, which produces the “vapor” • Invented in 2003, but it did not hit the US market until 2007.
E-CIGARETTES ARE NOT A CESSATION TOOL • Teens that initiate e-cigarette use are more likely to start using other tobacco products like hookah, cigars, and even cigarettes. • Beware of dual usage! o • 65% of youth who had used an e-cig in the last 30 days also reported using another tobacco product in the same time frame. Can e-cigarettes help people quit smoking? o o Evidence is insufficient o E-cigarettes are not on this list Currently 7 approved methods: patch, gum, lozenges, inhaler, nasal spray, Chantix, Zyban (Wellbutrin, Bupropion) SOURCE: CDC/NCHS, National Health Interview Survey, 2014 -2015. POTENTIAL HEALTH RISK & CONCERNS Potential Health Risk Nicotine addiction • Brain development • Increase risk for heart disease#1 Killer in the US Respiratory and eye irritation Asthma attacks E-liquid poisoning Battery explosions Popcorn lung Lacks Regulations • • Online sales to minors False claims or lack of evidence
HEALTH CONCERNS Teens’ developing brains are uniquely susceptible to the effects of nicotine. • “The teen years are critical for brain development, which continues into young adulthood…. Because nicotine affects the development of the brain’s reward system, continued e-cigarette use can not only lead to nicotine addiction, but it also can make other drugs such as cocaine and methamphetamine more pleasurable to a teen's developing brain. • Nicotine also affects the development of brain circuits that control attention and learning. • “Other risks include mood disorders and permanent problems with impulse control— failure to fight an urge or impulse that may harm oneself or others. ” National Institute on Drug Abuse, “Electronic Cigarettes (E-cigarettes)” (March 2018)
