VANHAN TESTAMENTIN TEOLOGISIA KEHITYSLINJOJA (EK 253 B): VANHAN TESTAMENTIN SYNTYPROSESSI: MIKÄ ON KAANON? Luentokurssi 3. 4. 2017 Hanna Tervanotko
KYSYMYKSIÄ? KOMMENTTEJA?
ESSEET • Esseen pituus? Keskimäärin noin 600– 800 sanaa (2– 3 sivua) vastaa yhtä opintopistettä (esim. 3 op: n pituinen essee on noin 2000 sanaa, 6 -7 sivua).
• Kehotus kirjoittaa sanat muistiin tulee Jumalalta: ”Ota kirjakäärö” • Jeremia kutsuu luokseen Barukin. • Jeremia sanelee kaiken minkä Jumala on puhunut. • Temppelissä Baruk lukee Jeremiaan sanat. • Jeremiaan sanat kirjattu vaan yhteen, ainoaan kirjakääröön. • Tämän ja eilisen keskustelun pohjalta, mitä ajattelet siitä, miten paljon VT: n maailmassa on traditioita kirjojen säilymisestä (erit. ottaen huomioon lukutaidon harvinaisuuden)?
MITÄ TEEMME TÄNÄÄN? • Tutustumme kaanoniin konseptina – Mikä on kaanon? Millaisia eri kaanoneita on olemassa? • Mitä termejä tekstit itse käyttävät kirjoituskokoelmasta? • Missä määrin kaanon on ”keinotekoinen” termi? Pohditaan termin eri merkityksiä ja nyansseja. • Pohdimme miten ja millaisin menetelmin kaanonin syntyä voidaan tutkia.
MIKÄ ON KAANON? • Huom. Jossain vaiheessa Homeroksen runoudesta aletaan puhua “kanonisena kirjallisuutena”. • Termi ei esiinny Raamatun kirjallisuudessa, vaan tuli käyttöön ympäröivästä kulttuurista. • Termi ei myöskään esiinny muussa hepreankielisessä kirjallisuudessa (tähän palataan myöhemmin).
”KAANON” / OHJEELLISET KIRJOITUKSET ANTIIKIN AIKANA?
Täydellisin kopio on Aleksandrinus. • Mitä muita käännöksiä tiedät?
LXX JA KÄÄNNÖSTYÖ • Aristeaan kirje kertoo käännöstyöstä. Sen mukaan kääntäjiä oli 70. • Kirje esittelee itsensä historiallisena dokumenttina, jonka Aristeas, joka työskenteli Ptolemy Philadelphuksen hovissa (285 -247 B. C. ), laati. Kirjeessä selvitetään seikkoja jotka vaikuttivat juutalaisen lain kääntämiseen kreikan kielelle. • Kirjeen kirjoitusajankohta on kiistelty. Mahdollisesti toisella esikristillisellä vuosisadalla. • Kirjeen autenttisuus kyseenalaistettu. Tästä debaatista huolimatta tärkeä todiste käänönstyöstä.
MITÄ TIEDÄMME KIRJAKOKOELMAN SYNNYSTÄ? KÄÄNNÖKSET It was my devotion to the pursuit of religious knowledge that led me to undertake the embassy to the man I have mentioned, who was held in the highest esteem by his own citizens and by others both for his virtue and his majesty and who had in his possession documents of the highest value to the Jews in his own country and in foreign lands for the interpretation of the divine law, for their laws are written on leather parchments in Jewish characters. 4 This embassy then I undertook with enthusiasm, having first of all found an opportunity of pleading with the king on behalf of the Jewish captives who had been transported from Judea to Egypt by the king's father, when he first obtained possession of this city and conquered the land of Egypt. It is worth while that I should tell 5 you this story, too, since I am convinced that you, with your disposition towards holiness and your sympathy with men who are living in accordance with the holy law, will all the more readily listen to the account which I purpose to set forth, since yourself have lately come to us from the island are anxious to hear everything that tends to build up the soul…On one occasion when I was present he was asked, How many thousand books are there in the library? 10 and he replied, 'More than two hundred thousand, O king, and I shall make endeavour in the immediate future to gather together the remainder also, so that the total of five hundred thousand may be reached. I am told that the laws of the Jews are worth transcribing and deserve a place in your library. ' 11 'What is to prevent you from doing this? ' replied the king. 'Everything that is necessary has been placed at your disposal. ' 'They need to be translated, ' answered Demetrius, 'for in the country of the Jews they use a peculiar alphabet (just as the Egyptians, too, have a special form of letters) and speak a peculiar dialect. They are supposed to use the Syriac tongue, but this is not the case; their language is quite different. ' And the king when he understood all the facts of the case ordered a letter to be written to the Jewish High Priest that his purpose (which has already been described) might be accomplished.
MITÄ TIEDÄMME KIRJAKOKOELMAN SYNNYSTÄ? KÄÄNNÖKSET • Mitä voimme tämän tekstikohdan perusteella sanoa kokoelman synnystä? • Aleksandriassa tarvittiin käännös • Ehkä jotkut Aleksandrian juutalaisista olivat unohtaneet/ eivät osanneet hepreaa. • Kirjurit pystyivät myös käännöstyöhön (tästä myös muista esimerkkejä) • Eri kirjat käännetty eri käännöstekniikoita seuraten.

MITÄ TIEDÄMME KIRJAKOKOELMAN SYNNYSTÄ? KIRJALLISUUSVIITTEET 1: RABBIININEN KIRJALLISUUS “Our Rabbis taught: It is permissible to fasten the Torah, the prophets, and the Hagiographa together. This is the opinion of R. Meir. R. Judah, however, says that the Torah, the prophets, and the Hagiographa should each be in a separate scroll; while the Sages say that each book should be separate. Rab Judah said: it is related that Boethus b. Zonin had the eight prophets fastened together at the suggestion of R. Eleazar b. Azariah. Others, however, report that he had them each one separate. Rabbi said: On one occasion a copy of the Torah, the prophets, and the Hagiographa (“holy writings”) all bound up together was brought before us, and we declared them fit and proper. Between each book of the Torah there should be left a space of four lines, and so between one Prophet and the next. In the twelve Minor Prophets, however, the space should only be three lines. If, however, the scribe finishes one book at the bottom [of a column], he should commence the next at the top [of the next]. Our Rabbis taught: If a man desires to fasten the Torah, the Prophets and the Hagiographa together, he may do so. At the beginning he should leave an empty space sufficient for winding round the cylinder, and at the end an empty space sufficient for winding round the whole circumference [of the scroll]. If he finishes a section at the bottom [of one column], he commences the next at the top [of the next]. ”(b. B. Bat. 13 b). Translated by Maurice Simon, The Babylonian Talmud (ed. I. Epstein; London: Soncino Press, 1935).

KIRJALLISUUSVIITTEET 2: TOISEN TEMPPELIN AJAN 4 QMMT KIRJALLISUUS “We have [written] to you so that you may study (carefully) the book of Moses and the books of the Prophets and (the writings) of David and [the events of] ages past. ” (4 Q 397 14 -21 9 -11). MITÄ TIEDÄMME KIRJAKOKOELMAN SYNNYSTÄ? KIRJALLISUUSVIITTEET 2: TOISEN TEMPPELIN AJAN Philo of Alexandria KIRJALLISUUS “In each house there is a consacrated room which is called a sanctuary or closet and closeted in this they are initiated into the mysteries of the sanctified life. They take nothing into it, either drink or food or any other of the things necessary for the needs of the body, but laws and oracles delivered through the mouth of prophets, and psalms and anything else which fosters and perfects knowledge and piety. ” (De Vita Contemplativa 25). MITÄ TIEDÄMME KIRJAKOKOELMAN SYNNYSTÄ? KIRJALLISUUSVIITTEET 2: TOISEN TEMPPELIN AJAN Josephus KIRJALLISUUS Naturally, then, or rather necessarily – seeing that it is not open to anyone to write of their own accord, nor is there any disagreement present in what is written, but the prophets alone learned, by inspiration from God, what had happened in the distant and most ancient past and recorded plainly events in their own time just as they occurred– among us there are not thousands of books in disagreement and conflict with each other, but only twenty-two books, containing the record of all time, which are rightly trusted. Five of these are the books of Moses, which contain both the laws and the tradition from the birth of humanity up to his death; this is a period of a little less than 3, 000 years. From the death of Moses until Artaxerxes, king of the Persians after Xerxes, the prophets after Moses wrote the history of what took place in their own times in thirteen books; the remaining four books contain hymns to God and instructions for people on life. Although such a long time has now passed, no-one has dared to add, to take away, or to alter anything; and it is innate in every Judean, right from birth, to regard them as decrees of God, to remain faithful to them and, if necessary, gladly to die on their behalf. ” (Against Apion 1: 37 -42). Translation by John M. G. Barclay, Flavius Josephus: Translation and Commentary. Volume 10: Against Apion (12 vols. ; ed. Steve Mason; Leiden: Brill, 2006).
MITÄ TIEDÄMME KIRJAKOKOELMAN SYNNYSTÄ? KIRJALLISUUSVIITTEET 2: TOISEN TEMPPELIN AJAN KIRJALLISUUS 2 Esdras 19 -26, 28 -48: 19 Then I answered and said, “Let me speak in your presence, 20 For I will go, as you have commanded me, and I will reprove the people who are now living; but who will warn those who Lord. will be born hereafter? For the world lies in darkness, and its inhabitants are without light. 21 For your law has been burned, and so no one knows the things which have been done or will be done by you. 22 If then I have found favor with you, send the holy spirit into me, and I will write everything that has happened in the world from the beginning, the things that were written in your law, so that people may be able to find the path, and that those who want to live in the last days may do so. ” 23 He answered me and said, “Go and gather the people, and tell them not to seek you forty days. 24 But prepare for yourself many writing tablets, and take with you Sarea, Dabria, Selemia, Ethanus, and Asiel—these five, who are trained to write rapidly; 25 and you shall come here, and I will light in your heart the lamp of understanding, which shall not be put out until what you are about to write is finished. 26 And when you have finished, some things you shall make public, and some you shall deliver in secret to the wise; tomorrow at this hour you shall begin to write. ” 37 So I took the five men, as he commanded me, and we proceeded to the field, and remained there. 38 And on the next day a voice called me, saying, “Ezra, open your mouth and drink what I give you to drink. ” 39 So I opened my mouth, and a full cup was offered to me; it was full of something like water, but its color was like fire. 40 I took it and drank; and when I had drunk it, my heart poured forth understanding, and wisdom increased in my breast, for my spirit retained its memory, 41 and my mouth was opened and was no longer closed. 42 Moreover, the Most High gave understanding to the five men, and by turns they wrote what was dictated, using characters that they did not know. They sat forty days; they wrote during the daytime, and ate their bread at night. 43 But as for me, I spoke in the daytime and was not silent at night. 44 So during the forty days, ninety-four[k] books were written. 45 And when the forty days were ended, the Most High spoke to me, saying, “Make public the twenty-four books that you wrote first, and let the worthy and the unworthy read them; 46 but keep the seventy that were written last, in order to give them to the wise among your people. 47 For in them is the spring of understanding, the fountain of wisdom, and the river of knowledge. ” 48 And I did so.
”KAANON” EI ESIINNY JUUTALAISISSA KIRJOITUKSISSA: ”LIKAAVAT KÄDET” M. Yadayim 4: 5 -6: The Aramaic [passages] which are in Ezra and Daniel impart uncleanness to hands. The Aramaic [passages contains in Scpritures] written in Hebrew, or a Hebrew version written in Aramaic or [passages written in archaic] Hebrew script do not impart uncleanness to hands. [Holy Scriptures] impart uncleanness to hands only if written in Assyrian characters, on parchment, and with ink. Say Sadducees: We complain against you, Pharisees. For you said, ’Holy Scriptures impart uncleanness to hands, but the books of Homer do not impart uncleanness to hands, ’ Said Rabban Yohanan b. Zakkai, ’ And do we have against the Pharisees only this matter alone? ’ Lo, they say, the bones of an ass are clean but the bones of Yohanan, high priest, are unclean. They said to him, according to their preciousness is their uncleanness. Go that a man should not make the bones of his father and mother into spoons. He said to them, So too Holy Scriptures: According to their preciousness is their uncleanness. But the books of Homer, which are not precious, do not impart uncleanness to hands.
MITÄ VOIMME PÄÄTELLÄ KIRJAKOKOELMASTA TEKSTIVIITTEIDEN • PERUSTEELLA? Lukumäärä? • Muoto?
