On Christmas eve in 1888, Van Gogh was hospitalized for severe blood loss and a missing EAR! It is believed that he cut off his right ear the night before. The motive may have been because his brother Theo sent a letter announcing that he was engaged to be married, or because he got into a very serious fight with his good friend and fellow artist Gaugin. His severe depression and anxiety is said to have made him develop several mental diseases including schizophrenia which would cause him to hear sounds and voices that were not real, he may have been trying to silence the sounds in his mind. There are rumors that he took the severed ear and gave it to a woman who he fancied before falling asleep in a pool of his own blood and being found by police. He later painted himself with bandages or showing only the left side of his head.

FUN FACTS!!!!! Pablo Picasso! His baptismal name was 23 words long, he was named for various family members and saints. His last name Picasso is actually his mothers maiden name, not his fathers last name. Picasso's first word was pencil! It's like Picasso was born an artist: his first word was "piz, " short of lápiz the Spanish word for 'pencil. ' His father Ruiz, an artist and art professor, gave him a formal education in art starting from the age of 7. When Pablo turned 13 his father vowed to give up painting as he felt that his child was a better artist than him.

I just want to know who stole my EYEBROWS! Did Picasso Steal the Mona Lisa? Actually no, but in 1911, when the famous painting “Mona Lisa” by Leonardo Da Vinci was stolen from the Louvre, the police took in Picasso's friend, the poet Guillaume Apollinaire pointed to Picasso as a suspect, so the police hauled him in for questioning. Both were later released.

Pablo Picasso. He is one of the most famous artists of the 20 th century and a household name even among people who, like myself, consider themselves to be complete novices in the art world. I recently went to a Picasso exhibition. What impressed me the most was not any individual piece of art, but rather his remarkably prolific output. Researchers have catalogued 26, 075 pieces of art created by Picasso and some people believe the total number is closer to 50, 000. When I discovered that Picasso lived to be 91 years old, I decided to do the math. Picasso lived for a total of 33, 403 days. With 26, 075 published works, that means Picasso averaged 1 new piece of artwork every day of his life from age 20 until his death at age 91. He created something new, every day, for 71 years. This unfathomable output not only played a large role in Picasso’s international fame, but also enabled him to amass a huge net worth of approximately $500 million by the time of his death in 1973. His work became so famous and so numerous that, according to the Art Loss Register, Picasso is the most stolen artist in history with over 550 works currently missing. What made Picasso great was not just how much art he produced, but also how he produced it. He co-founded the movement of Cubism and created the style of collage. He was the artist his contemporaries copied. Any discussion of the most well-known artists in history would have to include his name.

Cubism: Full of Little Cubes In 1909, Picasso and French artist Georges Braque co-founded an art movement known as cubism. Actually, it was a French art critic Louis Vauxcelles who first called it "bizarre cubiques" or cubism, after noting that Picasso and Braque's paintings are "full of little cubes. "
