VAL-YUM VALIUM By: Brenda Colleli HLTH 1050 – DRUGS IN THE INTERNATIONAL/GLOBAL COMMUNITY
1) In 1954, Leo Sternbach, a pharmacist at Hoffmann-La Roche pharmaceutical company, identified chemical compound for its sedative (calming) effects. 2)The compound was renamed chlordiazepoxide and introduced in the US in 1960 as a newer safer alternative to barbiturates, promoted with no dependence. - Named: Librium. World’s first clinically useful benzodiazepine. VALIUM: THE BESTSELLER DRUG 3) After the success of Librium, the race was on to create more BZDs for the market. 4) The second successful compound was diazepam, which was introduced in 1963 with the trade name Valium.
5) Valium is a prescription drug referred to generically as diazepam. It is prescribed anti-anxiety drug. 6) Valium is in a class of drugs called benzodiazepines. These drugs are likely to develop tolerance in the user, meaning that more of the drug is needed to get the same effect on a person, and they are also addictive 7) The prescribing information for this drug describes its effects as anti-anxiety, muscle relaxant, anticonvulsant, and amnesia-causing. 8) Valium quickly gained immense popularity with doctors and patients for it’s calming effects. 9) By the first 10 years 59. 3 million patients using Valium, = equals 81% of all tranquilizers 10) Between 1969 and 1982, Valium was the most prescribed drug in the US, sales peaked the FIRST BILLION dollars in medicine sold.
1970’s Magazines, Music and other forms of social propaganda supported the ‘chill’ and ‘better life effect’ by using Valium. Because of its status as the most famous BZD – “Mother’s Little Helper, ” as the Rolling Stones called it in their 1966 hit song.
EPIDEMIC CAME IN THREE WAVES First wave: 1991 - when death tolls involving opioids took a sharp incline from excessive Valium prescription and combinations of prescriptions for pain. Influence by pharmaceuticals claiming low rise of addiction and promotion of Dr’s to prescribe to NON-cancer patients Second wave: around 2010 the death rates from heroin abusers increased by 286% and approximately 80% of heroin users admitted misuse of opioids lead them to heroin due to lack of opioid availability. Why does the problem continue now? CDC- Center for Disease Control and Prevention issued guides for prescription opioids for chronic pain outside of cancer, palliative care (intense major injury), and hospice care. -These have been opposed by the pharmaceutical industries by: • Restricting the restrictions on prescriptions. ☹ • Undermining the CDCP • Faking ‘upsetting accusations’ in holding pharmaceutical accountable. • Opioid manufactures pay Dr’s off. Third Wave: 2013 increase of deaths related to synthetic opioids like fentanyl – 2016 over 20 THOUSAND deaths from Fentanyl and drugs.

This is referred to as a “rebound” effect
