Valka then and now

Valga and Valka are like one town, but in the same time they are not. Although the culture and history of the nations are closely connected. Valga is in Estonia but Valka is in Latvia from 1920. 1 CITY, 2 STATES – this is common slogan of Valka and Valga.

Valka is a place where I live and work. 7000 people live in Valka. There is a lot of beautiful and sweet places where I can go to study or relax. Valka is a border town to Estonia. I’m really proud of Valka development!

A daina is a traditional form of music or poetry from Latvian dainas often feature pre. Christian themes and legends, drone vocal styles and Baltic zithers (kokle). Lyrically, dainas concern themselves with native mythology but, in contrast to most similar forms, do not have any legendary heroes.

In my opinion, Latvian folk songs are priceless informational source about nations basis and world perception from past until nowadays. In spite of folk song oldness, they are really modern and understandable. They suit as song lyrics for many songs, which testify about folk song importance, rhythm and easiness. None Latvian scholastic resources are without Latvian dainas!

Lachplesis is an epic poem by Andrejs Pumpurs, a Latvian poet, who wrote it between 1872 -1887 based on local legends. Lachplesis is regarded as the Latvian national epic. Andrejs Pumpurs

This is one of my favourite books. When I’m reading it, I’m still learning somethig new about our nation history. Epose hero Lachplesis is Latvian symbol. I’m proud of our nation fortitude and the love of freedom. It hasn’t lost it’s meaning even nowadays.

The play is tragical comedy and tells us about a married pair, who had suffered because of the Soviet regime. They are ill now and must make a payment for the land the house. They don‘t have money. They are despairing, they cannot exist without the land their house. They made suicide, but. . . It comes out it was an incorrect address on the envelope. They died because of this mistake.

“Land tax” is an interesting play, because only 2 persons is in this play. It allows us to live these peoples lives throught different time in history. Land from our nation is an important and thing. Many times this special regard lead to tragic end, which is displayed in this play. I highly estimate writers talent.

They were written in 1973 as the tales for adults. The author tells us about lives using the colours around us. These fairy tales are translated in German, Estonian, Armenian and Russian. They have received H. K. Andersen international diploma.

Latvia in each season is colourful – white, yellow, brown, blue, black, red, purple, tabby and amber. Our lives and people are also colourful but can we see, hear, feel and understand it. Through the tales kids and adults learn to understand the life.
