Vacuoles Ashley Chapman Brandon Cherry Tyler George Location

Vacuoles Ashley Chapman, Brandon Cherry, Tyler George

Location • Located anywhere in the cell except in the nucleus and cell membrane • Storage that holds water, fluid, food, and waste • Distributed throughout the cells cytoplasm • “Power houses that creates energy for the cell; Mitochondrion. Animal Cells, Chloroplast in plant cells. • Larger in plant cells than in animal cells

Vacuoles: Animal Cell vs Plant Cell

Function/Structure • Vacuoles help maintain its structure of the plant cell by storing water • Maintain fluid balance/ internal hydrostatic pressure • Evaporate unwanted toxic substances • Maintain cells acidic internal p. H • Determine cell size and shape

Number of Organelle • A vacuole in the plant cell is • Many small vacuoles spread rather large through the animal cell • Can consist from 35%-90% of the • Animal cell vacuoles may also be cell size called endosomes, lysosomes, or secretory vesicles. • Thin active membrane called Tonoplast envelops the fluid • Usually involved with exocytosis without damaging other and endocytosis organelles

Associated Diseases • Vacuolar Myopathy is a rare muscle disease that causes weakening in the muscles • This is due to abnormal pockets forming in the muscle tissue cells at that specific location (arms, legs, heart etc. ) • Autophagic vacuoles are frequent in neuromuscular disorders, one of which is Danon Disease • Caused by 1 mutated protein in the membrane
