Utilizing SAEBRS Data Liz Dent Elementary School Counselor Humboldt Community School District Iowa School Counselor Association Conference November 4, 2019
What is SAEBRS? ➔ Social, Academic, Emotional Behavior Risk Screener through Fast. Bridge ➔ Likert scale questions about students ➔ Completed by classroom/homeroom teacher 3 x per year - 2 -3 minutes per student
Why use SAEBRS? ➔ ➔ Efficient Teachers already familiar with the system Data is easily accessible Data is comprehensive (for a screener)
How do I get my SAEBRS data? ➔ Log in as District Manager ➔ Choose “Reporting” tab ➔ Scroll down to “Student Data Download” and click “View Report”
Um. . . what? ➔ A gigantic spreadsheet that goes on forever!
What data do I need? ➔ Delete ALL columns except: ◆ First Name ◆ Last Name ◆ Grade ◆ Fall/Winter/Spring (whatever window you need) SAEBRS Teacher SEBA SAEBRS Items Correct ◆ Fall/Winter/Spring (whatever window you need) SAEBRS Teacher SEBA SAEBRS Social Items Correct ◆ Fall/Winter/Spring (whatever window you need) SAEBRS Teacher SEBA SAEBRS Academic Items Correct ◆ Fall/Winter/Spring (whatever window you need) SAEBRS Teacher SEBA SAEBRS Emotional Items Correct ➔ You will get this
Sorting Data ➔ Rename data headings so they’re easier to read (Composite, Social, Academic, Emotional) ➔ Sort data by grade, then by last name ◆ Highlight all columns ◆ Choose Data --- Sort Range -- click “Data has header row” box --- sort by “Grade” --- choose Add another sort column --- then by “Last Name” ➔ Gives you this
Benchmarks
Benchmarks ➔ Choose SAEBRS assessment ➔ Choose any grade level (the benchmarks are the same) ➔ Click Submit
Benchmarks
Labelling benchmarks ➔ Label below composite benchmark red, and at or above benchmark green. ➔ It will look like this.
Divide the data by grades ➔ Categorizing the data by grades makes creating intervention groups easier and more efficient ➔ You end up with this
I know who is “at risk”. . . now what? ➔ Create small groups ◆ Compile list of students who fall below the composite benchmark score ◆ Look at each domain (social, academic, and emotional) - what domain is furthest from the benchmark? ◆ Group students under the lowest domain score to see group needs (academic, social, or emotional) ➔ My groups first serve students that are furthest from benchmark ➔ Considerations ◆ Space - I take 5 students per grade level at lunch ◆ Behaviors - some kids cannot be in a small group together, so I may switch students around to optimize our available time
What is the effect? ➔ ➔ 2 days of groups per week per grade level 2 rounds of groups for fall and winter data 40 student spots per grade level per year 5 grade levels (K-4) means 200 students in small group each year ◆ Some students go through more than 1 time ◆ If not enough “at risk” students classified, I still take lowest scoring students to create groups to utilize the lunch bunch time in each grade level ➔ I do still allow for some teacher and parent requests for small group inclusion - but this gives me the option to let a teacher know I have high needs if necessary
How can I see more about a student’s needs? ➔ ➔ Log in as a specialist - choose the student’s classroom Choose Reporting tab Choose Individual Skills Report For Assessment, choose SAEBRS Teacher, and the screening window you want (fall, winter, spring)
Each report looks like this:
A high-scoring student would look like this:
How do student reports help me? ➔ Utilize student reports to see where students in a group may have specific similar struggles ➔ Utilize student reports when working with a student individually
How can SAEBRS be used for Universal supports? ➔ Give TIME to classroom teachers (we use professional development time) ➔ They can pull up their classroom of students ➔ Questions to ask ◆ Overall, do I have a lot of academic, social, or emotional needs? ◆ What topics could I bring up to my class to help? (morning meetings, journal prompts, etc) ◆ What type of environment does my class need? (If class struggles with worry/anxiety overall, need very predictable environment)
