Registering http: //vln. school. nz Click ‘Log in’ Click ‘Register’ if you don’t want to use a Google Account. If you have a Google account and are logged in to it, you can choose this option. You will then continue to select this each time to log in.

Registering If you chose to not link to a Google account, complete the form and click ‘Register’. Check your email for the confirmation link. If you don’t use a school. nz email address, it can take up to 24 hours to be approved.

You can set the level of access for each thing. Click ‘Edit profile. Fill in any of the information you feel comfortable sharing. Click the arrow to set the level of access.

Making friends The VLN is a social place and you can ‘friend’ people the

Making friends The VLN is a social place and you can ‘friend’ people the same way as you can in other social networks. Advantages of doing this is that you can be informed when those people add content or comments. You can also view their profile if they have set the level of permission to ‘Friends only’.

Otherwise, you can click on a person’s name where you can see their activity in the VLN to take you to their profile. You can then request to be their friend there. Click on ‘Groups’ Look at the popular groups Latest discussion highlights the active groups. Click ‘Join Group’ when you go to the group page. Featured groups are also a great starting place.

Considering your purpose Any member of the VLN community can begin a group but the first you should think about your purpose, your audience and how you will maintain the space. One place to support your thinking around this, is the Learning Communities Online (LCO) handbook group.

Key considerations before setting up a group • Is there already a group within

Key considerations before setting up a group • Is there already a group within the VLN that I can contribute to rather than create a separate group? • Will a VLN space meet the needs of my intended audience? • Will there be enough activity to create a group or would this be better as a discussion topic within one of the larger groups so that there is a ‘ready made’ audience? • Do I have the time to support the development and growth of the group or can I bring in others to support me?

Key considerations when setting up the group • Will my group be closed to invited members only, open to everyone in the VLN, or open to anyone with the link? • What will I name my group so that it is picked up in searches? • What types of options do I want to ‘turn on’ for my group? • What will I write for the group description that is succinct but specific enough for people to understand the key purpose and intended audience? • How can I make my group attractive and inviting? • What tools will be my focus in the group? e. g. blog posts, pages, group content pages, bookmarks

Group permissions Groups can be set up as ‘Open’ or ‘Closed’. Note that you

You can also decide if your group will be visible to the public, VLN members or just the group members. If it is visible to others it means it will be listed in ‘Groups’ and people can get to the landing page with the title and description but won’t be able access other content unless they join. Group tools There a range of tools that you can turn on or off for your group. Every tool that you turn on will be visible in the left navigation of your group. After you have set up your group, you can also add widgets to the group’s landing page containing content from different tools.
