Registration with VEC In order for the VEC to serve you, it is necessary for you to register with them. A complete, accurate registration with details about your work history greatly helps their ability to match you with available jobs. It also helps them know what kind of work you are seeking. Sketchy, incomplete registrations make it very difficult for them to achieve the primary goal— EMPLOYMENT. 9/27/2021 9
Registration with VEC Registration is now done online. The website is https: //www. vawc. virginia. gov. Let’s see how the website is set up. 9/27/2021 10

Next Step the Resume 9/27/2021 21
The Résumé More and more companies are requiring a résumé as part of the application process, even for entry-level and unskilled positions. You should have a résumé ready, preferably saved on a disk as well as on paper. Most computers have a résumé wizard installed on them, so creating one is quite easy. The VEC website has one; you can create your résumé and save it there so you can get to it from any computer with internet access. . It might help if you would have your work history with you when you create a simple résumé. While the résumés may be required, employers do not expect a polished résumé from each applicant; it all depends on the level of the position. 9/27/2021 22

Employers can use this computer system to search for employees to hire. They cannot see your résumé unless you choose the second choice under “Accessibility. ” They will not be able to see your address. If you do not wish to have your resume available for potential employers to see, select the first choice. Choose One The easiest way to create a résumé is to use “Manual Format. ” It will also save you some steps in completing the registration process because you will not need to type your work history later. 9/27/2021 24
You should select a title that indicates the type of work you are seeking. It is best to create a new résumé for each type. Try a title such as “Experienced Warehouse Worker” or “Certified Welder” rather than just say “John Doe’s Résumé. ” Select Resume Title Here 9/27/2021 25
Résumé Objective Most résumés today do not include an objective. Employers realize that résumé objectives have little or no value. If you do want to include one, your résumé’s statement of objective should convey three important pieces of information: the type of role you seek, your key qualifications, and the value you’ll bring to the company. Here is a good example: To support executive teams in a senior administrative position where my communication abilities, resourcefulness and understanding of client-driven organizations will be of value. 9/27/2021 26
Important! The VEC system allows you to do a job match for yourself; you don’t have to wait for them to find jobs that match your skills and experience. You know yourself better than they ever will, so it makes more sense for you to look at the jobs yourself. Also, they only match jobs that are sent to their office. Their New system includes open jobs from many sources: state and federal agencies, other job banks, corporate websites, hospitals, educational institutions, newspaper ads, and private job banks. You can usually contact those other employers directly! 9/27/2021 27

Job Application Tips Fill in every blank. When space is given for work history, WRITE IT! Don’t think that merely attaching a résumé will be enough. Be sure to sign where a signature is requested. Many applications require multiple signatures because of permission forms for background checks or drug screenings. Be sure to indicate the job for which you are applying. Many companies have more than one position listed and don’t bother to figure out which one you want. Troublesome or incomplete applications usually wind up in the trash. If the application calls for references, supply them! If it stipulates professional references, do not put in the names of friends or family members! (It’s a good idea to prepare a reference list [at least three names, addresses, phone numbers] to carry with you when applying for jobs. 9/27/2021 30
