3 OUR GOALS Participants will engage in discussions and work with peers to… By the end of the session teachers will leave with… • identify connections between Reading and Writing • a better understanding on how to connect Reading and Writing • explore an instructional strategy for Reading that can be transferred into a Writing instructional practice • Some new strategies for connecting Reading and Writing • a new strategy to write a stronger paragraph • • select a topic and write a central idea choose three detail words and write a supporting sentence for each detail.
BRAIN RESEARCH: WHAT DOES THIS MEAN AS IT PERTAINS TO READING AND WRITING? Recent brain research shows that we learn in a web like fashion--- the web of context. The brain searches for patterns and simultaneously goes down many paths. We cannot teach in isolation and expect kids to apply it. - Jeff Anderson
HOW IS OUR READING CONNECTED TO OUR WRITING? 5
6 MENTOR TEXT
USING MENTOR TEXTS TO TEACH THE READING AND THE WRITING CONNECTION • First, read for comprehension. • Return to the text to notice author’s craft and apply it to writing. • Read like a writer. 7
MAKING CONNECTIONS • What connections are you making with the text? • Write about those connections you are making. 8
ACADEMIC VOCABULARY • Topic • Central Idea • Supporting detail • Concluding statement • Author’s craft
BRAINSTORMING Topics Friends Pets Sports Family food Central Idea Peter is my best friend in the class.
PLANNING A PARAGRAPH Topic Central Idea My dog Details beautiful clever tricks take care My dog, Harry, is the most wonderful pet anyone could have.
A STRONG PARAGRAPH SAMPLE My Dog, Harry (Topic) My dog, Harry, is the most wonderful pet anyone could have. He is a beautiful white dog with black spots who likes everything. He is very smart and plays different clever tricks. I love taking care of him. There is not a better pet anywhere.
LET’S NOTICE AN AUTHOR’S CRAFT TECHNIQUE USED BY THE AUTHOR IN THE TEXT. • What do you notice the author is doing in sentence number two? • Why is the author doing that? • What is the purpose of the ellipsis in a sentence? • Ellipsis are used to create suspense or interest in a sentence. • Now, let’s try this technique in our paragraph.
LET’S IMITATE THIS AUTHOR’S CRAFT TECHNIQUE IN THE PARAGRAPH. My Dog, Harry My dog, Harry, is the most wonderful pet anyone could have. He is a beautiful white dog with black spots who likes everything, except. . . getting a bath. He is very smart and plays different clever tricks. I love taking care of him. There is not a better pet anywhere.
DO IT YOURSELF Let’s do a Hands-on Activity. 1 - Think about the connections you made with the mentor text. 2 - Identify the topic and create a central idea. 3 - Choose three detail words and create a sentence for each detail. 4 - Imitate the author’s craft technique (ellipsis) used in the mentor text. 5 - Create a concluding statement. 6 - Write each sentence in a different color matching the sentence strip model on the right. 7 - Connect all the sentences together.
