We use the present perfect to talk about experiences (things we have done). I have been to Japan. We use the simple past to talk about completed actions in past. I went to Japan. We can use the simple past with time expressions, but we CAN’T use the present perfect with time expressions. I went to Japan last summer. I have been to Japan last summer. X
We can switch between the two verb tenses in conversation. Have you ever gone camping? Yes, I’ve gone camping. Cool! When did you go camping? I went camping last week.
